Question about LiteOn LVW-5001

I'm hoping that kabanero or somebody else who owns one can answer, so here goes:

I haven't been able to find a copy of the LiteOn manual, but other posts in these forums say that the Gateway 230 is just a rebadged 5001. In the Gateway's manual, it only mentions being able to pause while recording when the input is set to the tv tuner.

Is this an actual limitation in this unit, or can you pause while recording with an RCA, S-Video or FireWire input source as well?

If there's no pause function, I'll have to stick with the LONG way for LaserDisc backups (record to DV, then convert on the computer. Time-consuming, but I can get everything into one title).

You can pause and un-pause any recording from any input. I have done this to edit commercials from TV programs originally recorded on VHS. The only thing you can't do is change the type of input while in the record mode even when paused.

Cool! the best part is that I don't have to worry about the local CompUSA selling out before Christmas. Their web site said they had it in stock at my store, but I couldn't find it. When I asked, the frustrated sales guy told me that they had a corporate audit, and even though the product appears in their newspaper ads, it's not in the "official layout" that the auditor uses for the inspection. They had to take them off the floor. He showed me a back room with 20 of them sitting on a shelf.

Luck me I got my LITEON LVW-5001 from Compusa just one day right after thanks giving Sunday, so PPl thinking they already went to Compusa picked up goodies on that Sunday , but the LITEON start on sale on the next day Monday.

Yes you can pause while recording, and you can also go to setup to adjust recording mode , so your next time recording will use the new setting.

- Does it play MiniDVD (DVD format on CD) and does it play mp3 on DVD ?
- Does it also output through FireWire ?
- Can you manualy create or delete chapter mark ?
- How does it make chapter marks from DV IN ? (some creates whenever camcorder was stoped,paused)
- Can you change index picture in menu ?
- Does it record Closed Caption ?
- Can you assign 4 letter code to TV station ?
- How many Timer recording can I enter ?
- Can you setup "One Touch Recording" that will set in 30min increments how long it will record ?
- How does it record from 16:9 source ? 16:9 or 4:3 with black bars ?
- Does this recoder convert between PAL and NTSC ?

Can not play MiniDVD smoothly. Not support. Play MP3/JPEG (and all together) in ISO/UDF format, no matter what kind of media.

No. Only input.

Chapter marks are caculated in "minutes". No matter what source is used. Sorry. Don't know much about the details.

No.

CC stream can be recorded but can not get it to be played.

- Can you assign 4 letter code to TV station ?

Possibly no.

- How many Timer recording can I enter ?

Five.

- Can you setup "One Touch Recording" that will set in 30min increments how long it will record ?

No. After instant record is activated by press [record], default record quality will be used and user has to stop recording by hand.

- How does it record from 16:9 source ? 16:9 or 4:3 with black bars ?

4:3 with black bars (I think).

- Does this recoder convert between PAL and NTSC ?

Convert? Don't quite understand what you mean. But the system can switch between PAL and NTSC.

I own PANASONIC dvd -ram recorder with HDD, they have a very nice feature that I like , the FR recording mode

meaning if I already recorded 10 hours movie in HardDisk, I can not fit into a single DVD without using FR, the FR recording mode will pick the best recording format to fit 10 hours movies already recorded into HD into 4.7 GB media ^_^.

Based on manual it is 6h maximum so forget about 10h
