so what is the benefit of dvd-ram? why would you use dvd-ram over something else?

It's a rewriteable format. It also has some special features that (+) and (-) (R)W lack which make it better for data storage/editing. For instance, my friend has a DVD-RAM set-top recorder and he can edit out the commercials of his shows recorded onto DVD-RAM; something that I don't think his possible with DVD+/-RW. DVD-RAM is not compatible with many DVD-ROM drives and set-top DVD players, but Panasonic I believe has good support for DVD-RAM in most of their products.
