Hi all, not sure whether this is the right channel but I'll ask the question and please point me to the right place.
I have a 500MB DVD quality movie (MPEG2 format) which I want to burn in the same quality to a CD RW and play in a DVD/Video CD Player (Same Quality is important). Nero will not let me do it (well, the CD it burns after warnings) is unreadable by PC software, DVD players, etc.
I found a solution - Ulead VideoStudio ww.ulead.com/learning/vs/vs6_03_01.htm , Creating DVD Movies on CD-R/CD-RW Discs, ... your projects in compatible devices such as Home DVD players. Just process your clips into MPEG-2 with defined playback ...
But the download file 70MBs and is expensive. Anyone know of a freeware program or cheap shareware program that will do the same. I have searched and searched but only find DVD ripper type software that takes files from a DVD disk. but nothing that can take a small MPEG file, keep it in DVD quality and burn to CD so it will play on a DVD player.
Although I don't want to lower the quality, I tried creating a SVCD file and burning onto CD via Nero. No probs; but again SVCD format Nero creates does not seem to be recognised by any DVD player or PC software.

Well, the trialware for Ulead products is thirty days. And since you only have "a" movie to burn to CD-R, you can go ahead and burn it that way. Here's the rub: You will be making a miniDVD, which only gives you about fifteen minutes of DVD-quality video per CD-R.
Hello. -
Download TMPEG. Use it's Mpeg Tools option to demultiplex your mpg file into it's separate video and audio streams. Then it to multiplex those two streams being certain to select the Super Video CD stream type at tho top of the dialogue box . This will convert your mpg into an SVCD burnable file.
Then any burning program that supports SVCD burning will burn the disk. -
...or just burn with nero xpress using the miniDVD template.
You can check here (in this site - the bar on your left) at DVD players to see if your dvd player supports miniDVDs
good luck -
You can't make a DVD on a CD that any Player will play.
Some Players will play MiniDVD format---a search on the right shows some 300 that will.
Most will play VCD not SVCD but quality goes down.
The problem is the player will recognize a CD Disc and will only let it play what it recognizes as CD valid content. -

Those of us who have burned miniDVDs know for certain that you do burn MPEG-2 DVD files onto a CD-R and it does play on certain machines. Trust me, it can be done. If you do not believe, make a short video of about five minutes, load it into Ulead Video Studio. Select
Create Disk-->DVD and follow the prompts, only load a CD-R(W) instead of a DVD±R(W). Your burner will burn the miniDVD.Hello. -

Yea read my first and second line again---
"You can't make a DVD on a CD that any Player will play.
Some Players will play MiniDVD format---a search on the right shows some 300 that will. "
What I was saying is not all players recognize it only about 1/3 that are reviewed on this site.....and if it won't play Mini DVD it is an unrecognized format on a CD -

Hello. -
Yea I know the feeling. I live down here by Houston, Texas, and the weather has been miserable 76 one day and 45 the next over and over and over again.
rafiquea---
I know the new Nero 6 will do Mini DVD can't remember if 5XXX does or not. If you are thinking about sharing your AHEM Home Video then you might think seriously about splurging and get a DVD recorder for your computer last I looked they can be had in the $100.00 USD range.
I looked in Tools and Guides real quick and didn't see anything on Mini DVD You might do a Forum search and see what other people are using.
Also when you are looking at Recorders Most come with Software that lets you do a lot of the Authoring and burning too... -
how can you have a dvd quality mpeg2 movie of 500mb, it would have to be extremely short, no more than 15 or 20 minutes
-
Thank you for your help. Very much appreciated. These small movies are only about 10-15 minutes long (home movies) which I want to share with family & friends.
Looks like the most effective way (and cost effective) way forward is to buy a DVD writer. In the meantime I will download and try out Ulead VideoStudio. (No-one has been able to find me freeware or cheap shareware equivilent).
Thanks again and wish you alll a great new year 2004.
