If you are planning to seriously get into ripping and compressing DVD's, it looks to me like it's time to upgrade yer puter.

With a P3, and I'd bet sub-256mb ram, it's gonna take a while to rip and compress a DVD. HD space can be an issue also. Even if u have more than 10 gigs of free space on yer HD, if you haven't defragged lately, the system has to search for a place to put each bit of data.

DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, IMO, are the best (free) programs for ripping and compressing. Using your system, I'd say you are at or very near top speed.

  3. I have a Celeron 1ghz with 256mb and foreign movies which are 3hrs can approx 1hr 30mins and R1 movies can take around the 1hr mark. Since I cant afford a new P4 yet I usually shrink overnight and set DVD Shrink to turn off the computer automatically. The next day I burn the end result. I have burned over 100+ discs this way and am happy with every one so far.

i use a Amd 1600xp and 512mb ram, it takes maximum 20 minutes to rip a single layer dvd and maximum 25 minutes to rip a dual layer dvd. but on average it takes about 15 minutes to rip a dvd. i rip in a separate pioneer dvd player as it seems to rip faster than my nec dvd writer.
