  1. Hello,

I've search this forum, found vaguely similar problems, but nothing helped.
    So here is the problem:
I have a K7M MB with AMD Athlon CPU and a Via IDE bus. I have my 2 HDD on primary IDE, nec is master on secondary, Yamaha CRW8424E is slave. I have a Pioneer DVD-303 on a SCSI controller.

The nec can read anything fine, burn DVD+R(W) fine, burn CD-R(W) also fine. The problem lies with the DVD-R(W). When I try to burn them with Nero (different versions tested: 6.0.0.9; 6.0.0.15; 6.0.0.23), Nero hangs and I when I do a hard reboot, the drive will not be detected, only on second reboot! This is similar to the problem from Maxim: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=188986

I tried with different brands of DVDs (Emtec, Intenso, Memorex), I tried with different firmwares (1.07, 1.08, 1.09 official and hacked). I also tried to update my IDE bus driver: it was worse, I had buffer underruns with DVD+R(W)s and -R(W)s still did not worked.

Finally I wanted to try with different burning softwares, but the drive will not be recognised as a DVD writer in RecordNow Max and PrimoDVD. I also tried to the DMA off on the secondary channel (nur PIO). Did not help!
    So here are the questions:
    1. does anyone have an idea why RecordNow Max and PrimoDVD won't recognised the nec as a dvd writer?
    2. has someone had the same problem trying to burn DVD-R(W)s with the nd-1300a?
Any help would be appreciated because I am runing out of ideas here.

    Thanx!

I burn RITEK 2x -RW's just fine. I have used NERO 6.0.0.19 , 6.0.0.23 and DVDDecryptor 3.0.17 (which has a knows bug with the 1300a, don't use it no buffer underrrun protection).

Never heard of Emtec or Intenso, try different media?

It's the same song... simply, DO NOT USE PROPRIETARY IDE SW DRIVERS [VIA IDE Driver, NForce IDE Driver etc.]. These drivers include multilevel cache accelerating which is good for many reasons [performance, quick access to files, search-cache etc.], but not at all for DVD-writing [data are pumped into DVD writer via IDE driver according to another scheme than is used for CD writing.

Use generic Microsoft IDE drivers, they do the trick...

  4. Lester,
    thanks for the help.
After I updated the IDE driver and it became worse, I of course UNINSTALLED them and rolled back to the standard W2K IDE drivers.
So I was back to my original problem: still can not burn DVD-R(W).

By the way, I forgot to mention it on the 1st post: system with W2K SP4. I have a personal FW and virus scanner always on.

Since it's the time of the year: happy new year to everyone!

  5. Gazorgan,
thanks for the tip, I will give it a try and keep you posted.

I am not too optimistic though, since Nero will just freeze at the beginning of the burning session with DVD-Rs. I am not sure that another brand will really help.
With the DVD-RW (Intenso), I get a message like "not enough space on this media".
FYI: EMTEC and Intenso: those brands can be found in Germany. That's where I live.

Maybe it's just an idea, but... try to set up your NEC like a secondary slave and Yamaha like a secondary master. And remove the SCSI adapter [if it is a PCI Card adapter] and Pioneer. If the SCSI controller is mainboard-based [built-in], disable it [in BIOS]. Check out the jumpers on NEC and Yamaha that their settings match. Also reset BIOS to default. Uninstall Nero 6.x and roll back to 5.5.10.54. It has an older WNASPI32.DLL but more stable and reliable.

I've heard you say this several times i.e., the buffer under run protection thing but ...

I have the NEC ND-1300A and I use DVD Decrypter 3.1.7.0 and I have never had a problem. I do notice that sometimes (not on every burn ... in fact on very few burns) the BUFFER will drop to 0 and then almost immediatly junp back up to 100%

This never seems to cause any problems. I always run DVDInfoPro to ensure that I have NO read errors and that is always the case. The DVD discs seem to play back fine.

  8. I also have a similar problem (using NEC 1300a, Win XP, Nero)- I can't burn DVD-RWs, but I can burn DVD+RWs fine. I can burn DVD-Rs, but not -RW. I think I must have installed something recently on my system that caused the problem, because I used to be able to burn to -RW discs, but now my drive won't even recognize them. DVDinfoPro says that there is no media present when I insert a blank -RW. The drive can see and read a burned -RW that I burned a few weeks back though. I'm using Ritek media, so I doubt it would be because of the media.

  9. Steve,

your problem definetely sounds like mine. If you could find out what you installed, thanks for telling.
Do you also have the problem that your drive will not be recognized by RecordNow Max as a writer but only as DVD-Rom?
So far, I still haven't found out why it is so...
    Thanx y'all for your help.
