  1. Hi,

I have an AVI that is 38:25 in length, per Vegas Video and Windows Media Player. However, when I convert this to an MPEG2 in order to burn a SVCD, the disc length is displayed as 34:07 on my DVD player. I use TMPGEnc to convert the AVI to an MPG. I use Nero version 6 to burn the file. I have also made an image using VCDEasy and then burned the image using Nero -- same result.

I have noticed that sometimes the size of the files on an SVCD seem peculiar, showing all folders to be 768 MB on a 700 MB disc, so perhaps the time difference is similar to that.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or what I might be doing wrong?

    Thanks,

    Brian

I'm puzzled as well by your dilemma. Perhaps your DVD player is erroneously reporting the file length. The only way to confirm would be to sit down and watch your movie on the player and hope for the best. Wouldn't hurt to check the disc on your PC for the play time if you haven't already done so.

As for the odd file sizes, VCD and SVCD are recorded in mode 2 cdxa format. All that means is that you are in fact able to put up to 800 MB's on a plain 80 minute cd-r. I'm sure someone can explain the particulars better than me but this is possible because a mode 2 disc uses up space that is normally reserved for error protection on a standard mode 1 ISO disc.
