  1. how long do you think it will be until 8x dvd writers come here? or even those 16x sony ones i hear about, i hope they'll do -Rs. and how far away are those dual layer ones i keep hearing about?

im asking this cuz im thinking of buying a new dvd writer, so i just wanna see if its wise at this point in the "dvd burning saga" to say the least. and if u reply you can base it on opinion, but as always, fact would be nicer!

    thanx

I never heard of 8x or 16x dvd burners. I don't know if you should wait or not, but look at it that way. You can get a good 4x right now for about 120 bucks or even cheaper or you can wait untill 8x come out but it will be a lot more expensive. As far as performance goes I don't think you will win much with a 8x compared to 4x cause you can wait a couple of more minutes. But you can also wait untill 8x come out to get a 4x cause by then it would be dirt cheap. Since I never heard of 8x and don't know when they mighjt be coming out, you can be waiting for long time and I don't think it is worth it. That is just mine opinion but I don't know much.
If you don't mind spending you can get one of those "dual side burners" many ppl talk about them on this forum but I am not familiar with it.

  3. I just ordered a BenQ DW800A(8x DVD+R,4x DVD+RW) and it will allow you to set DVD-ROM booktype for $125USD from www.mwave.com
Why do you need DVD-R if DVD-ROM will play on 98%* of all players?

    *-based on online reports.

If you mean 8X DVD±R burner, it's already here in the US. The current firmware version of the NEC ND-2500A only allows the Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi Chemical 4X -R discs burned at 8X (actually Z-CLV 4X->6X->8X). Read the following link:

I have a pioneer DVR 106 and I read on this forum that it is possible to burn at 2x with 1x media if I update the firmware or something. Where can I find out more about that?

I'm currently buying RITEK G04's for 4x burning at around $1.05 each. Pretty good price. RITEK 8x media are going for around $1.65 in quantities of 100+. That's 60 cents to save 8 minutes.

Since I don't buy that many new DVD's a month, I don't see the need for 8x speed. I'm down to converitng my TV captures to DVD, which is time-consuming, but not in need of an 8x burner. Heck, I still burn my 48x CDR's at 16x becasue that's what the NEC 1300a burns at. I got a 52x burner sitting on a shelf because I just don't need the speed ( I burn an average of 5 CDR's a month anymore). When I did SVCD exclusively I would use the 52x because time did matter a little more.

  9. Anyone reading these pages besides me?

    Left Column: dvd writers

BTW, have fun finding cheap 8x media, some write 8x on 4x disks but only if you do a full disk & its not know how the data holds up in time.

Yup the plexor has been out a while now. Next up is the double layer burners and discs coming out around April. Now you can get close to 8 gigs + or - on ur DVDs. then the talk will be about waiting on those and buying an 8x single layer writer coz the price has come down.

  14. well jaxxboss, you seem enlightened, any word on when some of the big companies will be coming out with 8x-R writers?

On 8x -R I'm NOT enlightened, but I'd put my money on a big "by Feb"

Its an assumptions, but I did notice that LiteOns latest burner firmwares added support for Ritek G05 disc... guess thats the 8x -R disc.

The new LG drive with 8X +R burning was on sale at Futureshop for (after rebates) $229CAD yesterday. I opted for the LG-4040 since I need the DVD-RAM capability more than I need fast burning speeds. That was on sale for (after rebates) $119CAD. To the posters in the column saying that drive won't work with DVD-RAM, they are wrong. I just did 4 DVD-RAM discs of TV show episodes recorded from my Panasonic E80 and transferred them to my computer HDD. Worked flawlessly. If you're having poblems with the drive:

    1) Update the firmware. Mine is at A302.

    2) Don't use crap dics. I'm using Maxell and Panasonic DVD-RAM discs and they work flawlessly.

Sure you can wait for 8X discs but now I have more of a mind to wait til the new High Definition DVD formats are out. Those discs will hold 15 - 23 Gig so they will be a bit more useful to me than faster standard DVD burning or dual layer DVDs...

On that site it says that you might mess up your burner if you install the wrong firmware. Is it possible to mess up a burner just because of soft.

It's possible if it is "hacked" or unofficial firmware.Flashing can kill a drive if not done properly. Before upgrading firmware:
1.Disable DMA or use PIO mode on your drive.(read my guide below)
2.Disable all virusscan, firewall, etc programs and make sure no other programs are running in the background.
3.Make sure no discs are in the drive.
