    Hi,

I was just wondering what is the best blank media to use with the Sony DRU-700A (VYO8 with updated firmware)? I already used Memorex and Verbatim and neither of them gave me any successful burns.

  2. Did you try slowing down the burn speed?

Sounds like some messed up firmware if you aren't getting successful burns with one of the best medias available(verbatim).

No kidding, if verbatims aren't working there definitely is a problem. What are you using for burnig software? Try updating your firmware. I've used verbatims for years not a single problem

The software I'm trying to use is Sony DVD Architect 3.0c, because I'm trying to make a menu based DVD. But all I get is lousy playback when it gets to scenes on the 2nd layer.

I'm even burning it at the lowest speed allowed.

  7. Ah-ha, DL media.

Are you playing it in the computer or in a DVD player connected to the TV?

I had problems with +R Dl media in a Sony Changer that played OK in a Pioneer DVD recorder (531h). Same exact problem when it went to play things on the 2nd layer.

I'm playing it on a DVD Player (Samsung) hooked into my TV. It won't play in any player actually, for I've tried a Phillips one, and a Panasonic. It's as if the burner failed to do the 2nd layer properly.

Is the previous version of my burner (700A) perhaps better than the updated one (VY08)? Should I consider getting rid of the firmware update if it's possible? I never actually tried it without the update.

Have you tried playing these discs using a software player and your Sony Burner? I'm going to suspect it's the players that are not supporting the dual layer discs fully.

  12. Dual-layer playback is sketchy on a lot of set top players - which is why I still don't use it (that and the price premium).

The previous posters are correct in that you should try to play it on your computer, or another computer, to see if it behaves as poorly. If it's okay on the computer, then it's most likely the set top player having issues.

    For troubleshooting purposes,

    1. Try burning a dl disc using different software and see if your issue continues.
    2. When using DVDA, burn to an ISO file, and then burn that ISO file using dvd decrypter or imgburn to the physical dl disc. See if that resolves the issue.

Ya I just figured out it runs pretty smoothly on the computer. So it must be player conflicts. Dang. I was hoping I could play a DVD in a DVD player. Ah well.

As it stands, I'm going to try Slacker's ISO advice.

Hey, out of curiosity, how exactly do I burn to an ISO file, and then how do I look that file up in DVD Decrypter? After that, how would I go about burning that to a DL disc?

When you rip to disc using dvd decrypter choose MODE Iso read, then to burn using decrypter choose MODE Iso write, for DL burning in decrypter choose the MDS file instead of the actual Iso file. I'm not sure why but this is what I have been told.
