I downloaded a few mpeg2 clips (public domain) to use in a video project about civil defense and atomic war back in the fifties. The clips were both 640x480 resolution. I noticed a really weird problem with these clips...I previewed both clips in Windows Media Player, with no problems. Later in the day, I decided to watch them again...and to my surprise the resolution changed to 352x480...makes for a nice slender video, but is total worthless for my project. It gets better though...I came back to the clips to check them before posting here, and they both played at the correct 640x480. I closed them and tried opening them again, and, you guessed it, back to 352x480. I checked to make sure that media player wasn't just being retarded and resizing the video...I checked the clips' properties to verify the resolution. Media Player said it was using the InterVideo Video and Audio codecs for these clips. I'm wondering if it's the InterVideo Codecs that are problematic or if I have some gremlin running around in my machine.

  2. To ensure Mpeg-s play properly, use a proper software DVD player such as PowerDVD or WinDvd. WMP often ignores or incorrectly interprets the DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) flag. To see the true properties of an mpeg, the free version of bitrate viewer is reccomended.
