  1. I am looking to buy a new DVD player that will not give me grief when trying to playback VCD's and SVCD's. I presently own a RCA and it is junk.

What DVD player would you purchase?

Apex has a good reputation for playing anything.

Both of my Sub $50 units will play VCD/xVCD/SVCD/xSVCD/DVD/DVDR(+/-)/DVDRW(+/-)/KVCD and MP3. The Apex will do file mode mpg's but the opterite won't. The opterite will play WMA's.

The Opterite is much pickier about media (doesn't like TDK x2 -R's), whereas the Apex eats anything.

So, go cheap!!!! Buy one from somewhere that has a good return policy. Make some test disks so you can see how it does on xVCD/KVCD/xSVCD bitrates. And of course check it on your prefered media!!!

And of course, check you outputs (optical or digital in addition to stereo analog), Composite/S-Video/Proigressive.

  4. Apex removed VCD support from their players about a year back. Don't know if they restored it.

So I guess it must be older models that will play VCD's.

Price really is not an issue but "Headache Free" is. I just want to be able to make VCD's and not have to throw disks in the garbage every other day because the DVD gives me a "Read Disk Error", which my RCA does 98% of the time.

    Correct.

Can't really help you on a player, being from the UK.

Any Norcent DVD. U can get then at Wal-Mart real cheap and they play everything. Many hacks to make region free and some older Norcents (model 300) can be macrovison hack too.

  9. How much do you want to spend?
Panasonic has several models under $150USD that play everything and are pro.scan:F85,F65,S35,S25
    BestBuy,Circuit City,Sears,etc carry them.

You might want to run a ScanDisc/CD Quality test with Nero CDSpeed after making a VCD to make sure it's not the CD.

I would buy a 5/10pk of high quality Fuji or Sony CD-R before buying a new DVD player.
