I don't think it should recognise your lens cleaner disk unless there is meant to be data on it.

What do the instructions for the disk say?

    It says>

    1. insert the DVD HyperBrush into your DVD Player and press PLAY

There is no PLAY button on my burner

    2. After 8 to 10 sec. pres eject.

Right, so when you close the tray, the disk will spin up and then stop once the disk has been recognised (or not, but that doesn't matter because the brushes will have cleaned the lens). Then press eject.

Why are you trying to clean the lens? What's wrong with the burner?

After ejecting, the disc stays in the same place...so i guess it didt even start spining.

Im trying to clean the lense because im getting some power calibration error when i try to erase rewriteable DVD.

It will spin once you put it in, but I don't think that the errors you're getting have anything to do with your lens.

If you can hear the drive after you close the tray, then it's spinning.

    That's the problem. I can't hear anything.
And when i eject the tray after few seconds the disc remains in the same position.

If your drive really does not spin, it may be damaged. Go to the Sony download page where you get firmware updates and download the drivecheck program. Run that to verify your drive.

It may be a safer bet to open the tray and shoot some compressed air into the burner and see if that helps. Most times things like brushes on these lenses are not really the best idea.

The disc not being recognized may be God's little way of helping out ....

  15. Disk is for dvd players not for dvd writers. Don't put it in your Sony. They can scratch your lens = $$$$. Shoulda used compressed air.

I bet its your dvdrw DISK that was dirty. wash with water & pat dry.

    Can't compressed air displace lenses?

I've heard that using compressed air can dislodge dust and cause problems, too. It seems that no matter what one does there's going to be a downside. How is using a cleaning disk on a drive any different from a stand-alone player? Both have lasers. Are the lasers in burners more sensitive?

I'm talking about a VERY light spray back and forth with the door open.

There are so many small components inside the burner that your chances of a direct hit with a small burst of air hitting directly on the lense are not that great. You are hoping to get the deflected air to bounce around and GENTLY move any dust off the lens.

Remember we are talking about a small can of compressed air, not a power spraying type of thing where you open the door to the burner and blast an air stream inside for 3 minutes.

I would say the odds are less that air is going to dislodge a lens than a brush actually physically touching the lens would dislodge it.

Ok guys, i'm not having any success with the disc cleaner....so I tought i should try to clean the lens with some alchohol.

Is there a guide on the internet how to open DRU500A without to fu** it up?

  20. Wouldn't the disk HAVE to spin in order to attempt to recognize the disk?

Are you saying it spins for regular DVDs but not for this cleaner?

Alcohol can cloud lenses. No way would I do that. If you are afraid that air could move the lens, how can you think touching the lens with some method (a cotton swab ?) won't mess it up ?

I seriously don't think your lens being dirty would be the cause of your having trouble erasing your -RW discs. I would try every different software I could , I would clean the disc gently with soap and water and check for scratches and go to every means possible before I would open a sensitive electronic component. Do you have a friend who could try to erase your disc for you ?

You say you have "Some problems". Can you get more specific about the problems you're having and what software you are using when you are having them ?

    Okay,

It all started with princos 10 pack 2x RW's...and i tought it's the media. So i went to the store and bought some more expensive - PLATINUM DVD+RW. I was able to record on them, but not to erase them on the first try. I tryed NERO 5 and 6, Burn4Free, DVD Decrypter, Alchohol 120%, DVDinfo PRO... and no success. I tought it was just a crapy media so i bought some more expensive one. Verbatim DVD-RW. Burned pefectly...but could not erase the disc. Tried full format with DVDinfo Pro and NERO...and blaaaah blah blah...no WAY.

I tried every single firmware in conection with every program in every erasing mode i can think of...and nothing.

Yesterday, i tried with my friends DRU 510, and it worked.

As i said...i can still burn +/- R, as well as normal CD/RW...but no DVD+/-RW!

  24. If you simply want the thing to spin so it gets cleaned why not try this...

    Insert the disk
    Restart your machine
    go into your BIOS settings
find the boot section and tell the computer to boot from CDROM first if it is not already set.

    Restart your machine again.

This will cause the CD/DVD drive to actually spin while in DOS regardless of whether or not a disk is detected. This is a hardware command.

Not sure this will help but, my Sony will not run my cleaner CD unless I treat it like a music CD. I open up Music Match, select Sony Burner and then it sees the tracks on the cleaner CD. Then just play the tracks.

    Thanks,
I've got my disc cleaner to work/spin, but still no help...

Maybe my Sony is slowly dying.....anyway, i bought Pieneer DVR 106D today...

Works sweet, burns at 4X speed without any problems...was able to erase my cheap Princo RW's...hope it will last longer than my Sony.
1 yr and 2 weeks....only 2 f**** weeks over guarantee period...repairment would have cost me almost as much as my new Pioneer drive...

Thanks for your help, and sorry for my bad english

Thans handyguy, but I think I'm gonna stay away from Sony products for a while.
I expect from a 400 € burner (i bought it first week it came out here in Austria) to last little bit longer than 1 year. Yes, it worked well, but considering the fact that i was not some heavy-user (5-6 burns per week)...it's kinda dissapointment.

Yes, it still burns -R at 2X max and +R at 2,4X...never used it to rip a dvd, so i can't say anything about reading speed. As i already said, it can't burn or erase RW's, and since i store a lot of cartoons and sitcoms on them before i get to to the final authoring process, the sony unit became (almost) useless to me.
