I have a pioneer 104 at the moment, which has served me well but is becoming unreliable. It can only rip DVDs at 2X, even single layer ones.
I'm thinking of getting either the MSI or LiteON 8X writer, but wondered how fast they will rip (I dont have room for a seperate DVD ROM)
At the moment it takes about 25 mins to rip a dvdr to my hard drive. How fast would one of these writers do it in?
Cheers

it could be a number of things here, you hard drive might be fragmented if so it will take a longer time to add movie to computer.
try defragmenting your hard drive then it might work as fast as before. -
Out of the box, I think most if not all are capped at 2x. Some can have this removed through hacked firmware, but I suggest investing say £25 on a seperate DVD-ROM drive. Not only does this help alleiviate the wear and tear on the recorder, but you should see ripping speeds well in excess of 2x.
I have a lite-on 165H for this purpose and see average speeds of between 6 and 8x easily, on decent pressed SSSL discs this does hit the 16x mark on occasion. -
Yes most dvd burners are limited. My nec 1300a rips at 3x but I also have a liteon 163d dvd-rom drive that rips at 6x-9x speed.

Plextor and Lite-on both rip higher than 2 x according to a review I read somewhere, maybe Anandtech.com. But since a burner has only so much life in it, I bought a Starlogic DVD-ROM at Circuit City for 9.99 after MIR and it is a rebadged Lite-on xj-166s and rips single layer DVD's all the way up to 15x and dual layer at 7-8 x and doesn't wear out your burner.
After I bought the burner, I'd look for a good buy on a DVD Rom also.
My 2 cents.

Took the plunge and bought the MSI 8X and a liteon DVD rom. One thing which never even occurred to me before is that with 2 drives you can do a direct copy
Well worth the extra £30.
