I was wondering what are the really advantages of paying 2x just to have a HD?
Is it really a must have or can I live without it.
I will be buying a recorder soon, but i havent decided which model yet.
Besides the HD is there any other important feature I should consider?
Regards,
Reco

Editing is one advantage. You can edit post recording. You can also decides whether or not to keep your recorded programming for posterity after it has been recorded without wasting a disc. I'm sure there are many other advantages, but I can't think of any more.
Oh... if it has a built in TIVO, you can pause live tv... -
bumped..re-read post and realize he's talking about a built in HD (hard drive) in a standalone recoder. Wish there was a delete post option...

panasonics write to dvdram which is the same as a 4.7 gig HD & so you can edit on it. HD models do have a more tivo sort of thing called GUIDEPLUS, thats why they cost more, but all my TVs already have GUIDEPLUS....which is completely free.

I wrote up a good look at how the editing functions work in this thread:

You might check that out, as I think it would help you envision the kind of things you could do with a hard-drive machine.
Hope this helps!
