I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that DVD burning will max out at 16x. I could be wrong but I wouldn't put great stock in any claims of 24x dvd burning.
-
I think its safe to say if such a burner existed, Sony would release one for the PC too. Its quite a sudden jump...4 with 8 possibly coming, to 24X for this PSX device. I bet it won't write faster than 8, if it even writes at that. I've learned not to believe hype about a Sony product till I have it in my hands and can see for myself how good or bad it is.

Sony has also demonstrated its new ATAPI 8x DVD+R writer.
The specifications of the drive include 4x writing for DVD+RW/-R, 2x for DVD-RW, 12x DVD-ROM reading as well as 40/24/40 capabilities as a CD-RW drive

Sony has announced the new "PSX" platform:
- High speed dubbing from HDD to DVD
The speed of dubbing from HDD to DVD is 24 times maximum. One hour of programming on the HDD can be dubbed in 2.5 minutes (in case of using DVD-R). PSX adopts DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
Support for DVD+R may be available with a firmware upgrade
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This doesn't make any sense:
They can't make their new drive burn DVD-R at 8x
but they jump to 24xDVD-R/RW and DVD+RW for the PSX.
Someting stinks here...You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -
Maybe the people writing the article misunderstood 24x Read for 24x write. I think that is quite likely, and I agree, a PC burner of that speed would also be released if sony are gonna make this thing.

"The speed of dubbing from HDD to DVD is 24 times maximum"
Maybe it just means they can burn 24 minutes worth of video in 1 minute (likewise, 24 seconds worth in 1 second).
For lowest quality (6 Hours/DVD) then that would be 6x60 minutes.
360/24 = 15
15 minutes is the same speed at 4x DVD.
Methinks some people at gamespot arent too clever. -
-R is physically incapable of that speed. +R could do it. You'd think that puppy would have been showcased somewhere? They meant 24x Read, and then only at peak. Doesn't matter, 8x-12x average is plenty fast for reading.
No one curious why they crippled it with USB 1.1? I mean they put that worthless memory stick in it......To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -

speed of dubbing from hdd to dvd is 24 times ... maybe they are doing a svcd or vcd in which case it is feasible to get 24x speed ..,. doesnt say they are writing at dvd. resolution

They haven't said that they are burning at 24x DVD spin. They are just saying that "dubbing from hdd to dvd is 24 times".
That is a completely different thing.
For example, if the average bitrate for the video clip was only about 1/3 the DVD maximum (i.e., around 3000 kbit/s -- which can yield decent video quality), then an 8x burner will be "dubbing from the hdd to dvd at 24 times).

You guys are right but gamespot did say that

Hah, I should read the original articles more carefully...
Gamespot should have put more thought when writing the article. They've clearly taken the bait and misunderstood the Sony hype.

I am certainly considering getting one as soon as they get a bit cheaper. I expect they will introduce a lower price model with a smaller hard drive once they have mopped up the initial demand. With a 60gb drive instead of 120gb.

Maybe the article mis-spells what it really meant about 24X DVD writing speed. However, later in the same article, it clearly says: burning one hour of video on DVD only takes two and a half minutes - that's 24X !!!
It's very reasonable to DOUBT this claim. I don't believe until I see it in action.ktnwin - PATIENCE -
in the gaming circles its been reported that sony has dropped a fair many of the features that was going to make the machine something special in order to get it on the market quicker. Last I heard the Write speed had been dropped from 24X to 12X. saw it in the news header at GameFAQs.com not too long ago. I believe their news header is straight from Gamespot.

Just saw this "News" article, on www.camcorderinfo.com - regarding Sony market share:
"As reported by Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun News, the market strength of Japan's Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. has been shaken as competition heats up in the digital AV sectors of plasma-display television sets and DVD recorders. Domestic and overseas rivals have surpassed their profit margins.
Sony announced in late May a plan to release the advanced DVD model by the year-end in order to beat its rivals. As shopping season drew closer, frustration mounted among engineers at Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. who were developing the PSX DVD recorder. One engineer said, "We are not ready to release it.";
Although the company worked on developing the product at an unprecedented speed, it took an unexpectedly long time to verify the functions of the new model, threatening to delay its introduction into early next year.
Sony's electronics division saw its consolidated operating profit tumble 35% on the year in the fiscal first-half ended September 30. In October, the company reduced the device's dubbing speed by half, to 12x and added some other changes to the DVD format. As a result, it managed to release the model on December 13. Such developments indicate that Sony has lost share in the audiovisual market that it once led with the Walkman cassette player. "
So, what does "dubbing speed" mean??

Quote 'Copying of video files from the PSX's hard disk drive to DVD discs has been slowed down, from 24x speed to 12x speed'
As previous posters have said, it's not (or wasn't) going to burn DVD compliant video at 24X - and now not even at 24X but 12X... -
Thanks for the link, it had some interesting sub-links.
Too bad I still don't understand how 12x can be "twisted" into not being 12x - regardless of wheter it is "data" or "DVD-Video formatted" data.
Since the PSX was released 5-days ago, there should be some real-world reports as to what the actual burn speed is - and our discussions about "what they really meant" will be rendered moot.

MikieV: If you record in 6 h mode (EP, SLP or whatever Sony calls it) and dub this from HDD to DVD it will take ~0.5 h or 1/12 of the real recording time. However recording a full disc in 0.5 h only means 2x DVD write speed.

Im sceptical as others are, 16x was meant to be the max (comparable to 52x cd in terms of data). Philips demonstrated 16x in a test but it took a lot of work. Any faster and the terminal velocity would be too great (some guy rigged his cdrw to 60x+ speeds and the disc exploded), if they could employ some system to hold the disc as it was spinning, there would still be problems of laser calibration and aiming.

Info on the new sony PSX says that HDD to DVD dubbing has been reduced from 24x to 12x, even at 12x which philips have shown its possible, its still suprising its not in th retail arena
