Ok.. Here's the deal. I've been doing DVD's for some time now (authoriing and such), and I came across TMPGEnc Author when I decided to upgrade my version of TMPGEnc. I saw TMPGEnc Author and thought "Hrmm.. I wonder if this could replace my long, drawn out, process of using Permier->seperate audio/video files->using TMPGEnc on the video to create an m2v file + using BeSweet on the audio to create an ac3 file->SpruceUp to Author the DVD-> burning it out.

My thought was that TMPGEnc Author might be able to replace the piece with SpruceUp.

However, when I tried, TMPGEnc Author refused to import the m2v file that was created via TMPGEnc.

So, that begs the question: Is there a way, with TMPGEnc Author, to author DVD's with AC3 audio? SpruceUp (yes, and older program.. but it works!) imports the video and audio if they both have the same name (different extension, obviously) and authors the DVD from there... Can TMPGenc do this?

I am guessing that it can't, but I thought I would ask before I delete TMPGEnc Author from my hard drive.

Just to explain the process I am using:
I'm ripping from my miniDV camera and burning out compliant DVD's. I don't want PCM audio because, well, it's a waste of a lot of space. I'm making DVD's, not VCD's or SVCD's (I like my picture quality, thanks). And, I am not using MPEG audio since there are still a whole lot of DVD players that cannot read the MPEG audio streams. Oh, and the end result is that these play in stand alone players, not computers.

OK.. I was able to change the audio stream by selecting "Edit" and then "Browse" next to the audio stream, and then select my ac3 audio. That actually worked.

    Hrmm...

So, now back to my video file.

When I try to import the m2v file, I get "A video sequence header is necessary for every GOP in a standard DVD". This file imports in to SpruceUp with no problems. Maybe there is something SpruceUp is doing to the file that TMPGEnc Author is not? Maybe there is something else that I need to set when creating the m2v file in TMPGEnc?

    Any ideas?

It goes to show that I should check first before asking. Actually, it usually works out that if I get to the end of my rope and post something somewhere, I will find out my answer(s) shortly after hitting "submit".

Anyhow, it turns out that, within TMPGEnc, to insure that "output interval of sequence header" be set to 1 (not the default of 0) in the "GOP structure" tab on the "MPEG Settings" window.

Once I did that and regenerated the m2v file, everything went VERY well. A definite replacement for SpruceUp, especially since, with TMPGEnc, you can make background audio, motion menus, etc... all rather easily!

Did you convert your video with TMPGenc on the DVD setting? It has different templates depending on what you are making. I use both TMPGenc to convert and TMPGenc DVD Author to burn, so far no problems. I was using NERO to do all the conversions, but none of my DVD players would play the burned disc.

  5. Yes if your read the help files/docs closely you can often find answers
Tmpgenc DVD Author has good docs included, but of course sometime something is hard to find or does not exist in the docs for any program.

    Glad you found the answer.

As for mpeg2 audio not playing in set tops, I hear that ocasionally but it has never happened to me yet. I capture in mpeg2 and author same, never a problem with audio so far. Hopefully maybe the problem is becoming a thing of the past??
