yo, i just ordered a nec-1300a dvd burner, its hasn't come here yet but i need to know what kind of blank dvd's works good for people

we have an old sony dvd player i'd like to have something compatible with (i've read that different dvd's work for different people but i just need somewhere to start) and i'd like dvd's to make data backups

i don't know much about the difference between + and - but the nec is a multi-format drive so any suggestions would help!

    thx, josh

You'll get several different suggestions when u ask a question like that. I'd strongly suggest you click on the link on the left to the DVD Media forum. Read several of the posts there. I bet your question will be answered 10 times over.

  3. I've had very good luck with Ritek and varying success with other brands. If someone asked me (and it seems you are ) I'd recommend Ritek; they've played in all the standalones I've tried.

depends on what you are doing. For data back up I don't think it matters.

    For DVD video - RitekG04 (Ritek 1x - 4x bundled by Ritek)

In the NEC drive (of which my Plextor is an OEM rebadge with some tweaks), you'll discover that these brands work well:

    Fuji
Verbatim (most, not all - be careful)
    Ritek

But the branding is a tough thing because Verbatim and Fuji of course don't make the actual dyes used, they just press the discs (if that!), so what it really boils down to is who makes the dye in your disc.

Recently, I discovered that Memorex (who was always super-reliable for me) stopped using RICOH dye (good) and started using CMC dye (very very bad)... but only on spindles sold at Best Buy. The spindles on sale at Staples are still using the very reliable RICOH dye.

    Confused yet? It gets worse.

The only SURE way to get good media is to find some that you like, and works well, and is cheap, and STOCK UP ON IT.

Someday soon all media will get better, just like it did with CD-R media. But, unfortunately, that day is not today.

P.S. Anyone have any idea how CMC got so popular? I haven't talked to anyone who has really positive things to say about CMC. The best they get is "CMC doesn't totally suck in my drive".
