  3. Search guides by tool, select TMPGEnc, hit search. Read the newbie guide first, it'll help. Then read some of the, for instance, DivX to DVD MPEG2 guides.

    The only free converter I'm aware of is bbMPEG, definitely not for novices, and SLOW. IMO, TMPGEnc is your best bet, capable, inexpensive and fairly easy. Thirty day trial for MPEG2 function, no limit for MPEG1 VCDs. Don't go for the cheaper encoders, I've tried most of them (just for fun) and they stink by comparison

    Just about anything else you might want/need to do can be done with freeware: ffmpegGUI for audio conversion; VirtualdubMod or Virtualdub MPEG2 for editing, etc.; dvdauthorGUI or IFOEdit for authoring. Hmm, lots more cool programs, but do some reading first.
