Picture cleaning is not DVD Authoring. I'm moving your topic. Try post in correct forum...if you not sure use the general forum.

Well, you can't really improve the 'quality' of a file, but you can use different programs to filter out some of the problems. Virtualdub is a good place to start; Lots of filters available. TMPGEnc also can do filtering before the final encode to MPG. You can clean up a video, but don't expect miracles. You can never replace what is lost.

You can use a high end JVC VCR get one here http://www.crazyg.com/ or use a ATI AIW with MMC 8.1 capture software to clean up the video. TMPG I only like it for cartoon's for cleaning up. If you want to clean up really good JVC and A ATI AIW card you can get a ATI AIW card for $33.00 dollars up to $500.00 dollars the capturing is all the same but there not the same for gaming. All video card's drop price's fast that one thing I like about ATI AIW card's good capture card's and there cheep.

Hi Spiderman2k1,
For the cheaper ATI AIW cards, do you have any advice on how well they capture? I would like to start capturing AVI with an AIW card, as there are lots of ATI fans on this site. My experience with analog to DV via an ADS Pyro A/V Link has been good, however, would like to see if there will be a noticeable difference in quality between the two methods. Also, which cheaper models do you recommend? Thanks."Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws." - Plato (427-347 B.C.) -

Analog capture is very good with ATI AIW if your remaster old VHS tape's ATI AIW are the way to go. ATI radeon's are the one's you want to get i think there as low as $33.00 dollars at www.pricewatch.com there a 8500DV firewire ATI AIW card not all of them have DV in put's. As for analog capture all the ATI AIW radeon are the same they all use the same software. The only thing that a new card will do is play video game's better.
If your into Satellite capture Dazzle 2 is very good but read this forum www.dazzlegeek.com There MPEG 2 is better then ATI AIW but they do not have video filter's that ATI AIW have. And they have audio sync problem when backing up VHS tape's. I like dazzle 2 for Satellite dish and laser Disc back up's ATI AIW for VHS remastering. I think ATI AIW MPEG 2 still very good I would not bother with AVI capture's but ATI AIW can do MPEG 1 MPEG 2 and AVI -
