Hitler Was Gay, German Historian Says

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Adolf Hitler was a closet homosexual and used his homoerotic charisma to gain power, a leading German historian said.

Lothar Machtan's book "Hitler's Secret: The Double Life of a Dictator" argues that an awareness of the Nazi leader's sexual orientation may help us understand his life. Its launch has caused a sensation at this year's Frankfurt Book Fair.

"There are things in Hitler's life which are puzzling. The knowledge of his homosexuality can help us to understand him better," Machtan, professor of modern history at Bremen University, told Reuters in an interview at the fair.

Hitler learned to manipulate his "homoerotic potential" and used this "erotic charisma" to gain power.

"If we look at the important circle of people around Hitler, an awareness of his homosexuality makes it easier to comprehend how a man like him without contacts or influence could become so powerful," Machtan said.

Hitler used this charisma to win the backing of groups such as the Freikorps (Free Corps) militia and the Nazi "brown shirts" who provided the muscle that aided his accession to power in the chaotic democracy of the Weimar Republic.

I've heard this before, Hitler had a very perverse sexual nature (I dont mean being gay).

I've read a few books on Hitler, most notably John Toland's biography. It's been rumored that Hitler had only one testicle. It's also been stated that he had scatological fetishes, (women defecating on him. A couple of the women who did this with him commited suicide.) Although it was known that some of his followers were pedophiles and homosexuals, I've never read that Hitler hisself was. Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but if it's true, it's a rather recent pronouncement.

It's interesting that it's already being rumored by the tabloid press that Bin Laden has undeveloped sexual organs. It makes me wonder if it isn't common to sexually slander despots like Bin Laden and Hitler to make others afraid to follow them.

The fact that homosexuality was shunned by the society leads homosexuals to hide what they are. Thus they create stronger bonds in society and seek power. Their sexuality is kept secret, and the society never knows their preferences. To outward appearances they are very upright and concerned people. They take on characteristics the society applauds.
