  1. I have no idea what the difference is.

Ive been using DVD-R for literally everything. Why would someone buy a DVD+R drive? (I know that new ones do both DVD-R and DVD+R now)

    Why???

This has been covered about a million times, and you get zealots on both sides. Each side has some small technical advantages (for example +R's allow after-the-fact video changes that play seamlessly on set-top boxes while -R's do not) but in reality it's mostly a business/politics thing. +R is promoted by Philips, who of course invented DVD's. -R is promoted by lots of OTHER people.

In modern decks the media is equivalent. In older decks it's a mixed bag.

  3. DVD+R has a better wobble groove.

But -R has a better wibble flange.

another difference is back when they first came out the +R and +RW could both burn at 2.4 speed versus 1 speed for the DVD-R\-RW

it made a huge difference for people who were backing up computer data versus making discs compatible with set top players.

but now, like Gurm said...both are just about equal and the newest set top players won't have trouble playing either one. but...as far as the +RW media goes...it continues to have a higher burning speed than the -RW media.

Actually my A03 will burn at 2x speed. The fact that only Pioneer, Apple and perhaps one other Brand media, which were the most expensive available at approx £5.00 per disk (to start with) would burn at the speed doesn't matter. It would burn at 2X speed

And no, I am not advocating one format over the other, just pointing out a minor error in the above post.

This is all going to change with the intro of Hi-Definition recording equipment. I just saw this article at avsforum. Read it. It has the makings of a significant mess...

Only in the US. HDTV does not exist in Europe (except for one experimental sattelite channel), so HDTV recorders are of no interest here. HDTV may well come to Europe in the not too distant future (I hope so) but I am not aware of any plans to introduce it or by when.

Don't forget that DVD-R puts less stress on the hootegator in DVD-ROMS and burners.

  12. The only difference that really counts is that those DVD burners in your computer can burn to either format ( ex: Pioneer 106D ) can only read back DVD-R. So you burn your DVD in DVD+R and want to make another copy in the future your out of luck.

But, 2.4X is still faster than 2X
and at the time when they first came out there were no 2X discs readily available like there were 2.4X

Such is not the case with the GSA LG 4040B. It can read back it's +R burned discs.

ALL dual-mode burners can read and write both kinds of discs. That guy is high on crack. He's smoking so much hash that it makes ####### look like !.

Mine is bigger than yours. DVD-R holds a few more megs than DVD+R.

Oh wait, just got a DVD+-R drive, so don't care anymore.

But I can still get DVD-R cheaper than DVD+R.

Oh yeah? Well unless you can also read/write DVD-RAM with that shiny new drive of yours you can just leave the big red 'L' on your forehead!

Don't forget that the reverse trilad confibulator spec allows DVD+R to have better rotational bilateral compatibility. But then again, then DVD-R has motion compensated confibulation, hence rotational bilateralizations becomes moot.

And having a bigger one just means I'm first in line to bang Smurfette.

All I need now is DVD+R sale to test out some DVD+R 4x media. Any suggestions on store brands? I'm looking at TDK. Haven't followed the maker/brands much on DVD+R recently. Don't want to grab CMC by mistake, and they keep changing everything. Maybe Fuji, but not sure what they're packing right now.

I'm not sure what Fuji is using in the 4x +R's, but they have always worked for me, which screams out "NOT CMC".

  22. Well I seem to remember buying a smurfload of Memorex 4X DVD+Rs from Wal-Mart that turned out to be RICOHs.

But beware, rumor has it that these have been replaced by CMC MAG.F01. Now I realize that this is Gurm's Standard Issue manufacturer but I'm still suspicious of their overall quality.

What about Sony or Maxell DVD+Rs from Wally World?
