Which format will result in the best quality when converted to DVD format. Also, will the picture be fullscreen/widescreen, or smaller than that?

It all depends on the original bit-rate / source.

What is it you're trying to do?

To this point, I have only made backup copies of my already owned DVD movies, which is just MPEG2 to MPEG2 When converting VHS or home movies to MPEG2 format, I was curious as to whether you would keep the same "screen size" that was on the original source. I've seen short movie clips downloaded on my computer that play in a small window (probably due to the resolution). Does the bitrate affect the resolution? I just want to make sure that when I capture a home movie and convert it to MPEG2, it will play at the same screen size. Can you tell I'm a newbie with this...

No. The bitrate is independant of actual resolution. A lower bitrate will affect quality to some extent but the resolution will not change.

See the left hand column for glossary and guides to do this.

    Hope this helps.

For backups of DVDs, don't worry about the format, just rip the files to HD, use DVD2One the reduce the size and then burn with whatever software you have.

For VHS to DVD, you're going to have to 'capture' the VHS video - this is a whole new topic in itself, best explored by reading the guides on the left.

Bit-rate and resolution are independent of eachother, but are usually directly proportional: high resolutions need high bitrates to keep up the quality.

What would determine what resolution I will get when converting to MPEG2. Does the capture card have anything to do with this, or is it the actual file you are converting. What do you need to do to increase the resolution and/or bitrate of a VHS file captured to your HD.

A lot of this is theoretical at this point. I have a DVD burner on my computer, and will have an ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 Pro by Christmas. I plan on capturing VHS using that card. Is that what you are looking for?

Sorry to jump in on your chat here guys but, HELP! Im havin' a chuffin mare here...

Thought I'd convert some avi files onto dvd (avi about 650mb) and backup a couple of dvd's. Have only managed to do two films due to numerous problems, from working out how to operate tmpgenc (who named this? dyslexics nightmare!) to fitting/shrinking/removing the cr@p you get in dvd's to fit onto one 4.7 dvd.... Have burnt two off, hurrah!! But neither work, hooroo...

Cant understand it. I get 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the film (which is purrrfect) and then it starts jumping and pausing and genrally getting right on me t*ts.

Ive got a Goodmans 2100B. Have checked out the info on players with no joy. Have a pioneer 106d (i think, its on me profile) and am using non brand blank dvds.

Anyone come across this gyp before and if so, what can I do??

By the way, if im putting this q in the wrong place, please direct me to the right one. Ta very much.
