  1. What format is best if I want to send some video over the internet. Both sending and receiving are broadband (FiOS to DSL). I'm posting here because I'm not sure where is appropriate. Thank you for your time.

If you're both windows users you can send WMV, which Windows Movie Maker can make for you.

Personally, I recommend getting a free YouTube account and posting videos there. Handy for even your non broadband peeps.

  4. Thanks. So what you guys are saying, is whatever I use, get it into MPEG-1 format to send and play. This format strikes a balance between quality and reasonable size for transfer? Thanks for your time.

MPEG-1 is ok but WMV looks better at the same bitrate(eg 750kbps) and resolution(eg 320x240).
    A good(and free) MPEG-1 encoder is TMPGEnc.

Earlier versions of Windows (such as 9X/ME, and maybe NT/2K - I don't know for sure) may need to have Windows Media support installed before they can play WMV/WMA files, however. (And/or maybe a Media Player update.)

How long is the clip (mins) and what is the resolution?
    Regards,

  8. rhegedus...the clips would only be around ten minutes. I don't know what the resolution would be, I'm new at this. I imagine I will be capturing some DV using Windv, and then possibly encoding it using TMPGEnc. So whatever specs that ends up being...
