  1. I decided to use iDVD to burn some home video to DVD for playback. Once I did the DVD will play in several computers (PC & MAC) but will NOT play in my Sony DVP-NS700P home player. I have used the mac to copy a movie before and play it without problems on my home DVD player. Both cases were using the Apple supplied DVD-R media.

    Any ideas?

    The big three:

    1. Did you use Apple Media this time?
    2. At what speed did you burn the project?
    3. During anytime during the project, did you PREVIEW in
DVD PLAYER before burning to DVD? Chances are something
    wasn't fully rendered...?

  3. I used the SAME apple DVD-R media. Don't know what speed I burned it at just clicked on the BURN button in iDVD (took 90 minutes to burn a 90 minutes video, guess it was 1x). And it does play in computers.

By doing so, iDVD defaults to whatever speed THE MEDIA is,
not a specified speed like you can designate in Toast.
The fact that it took 90 mins could actually mean that it
had to encode the parts of the project before burning,
not necessarily the burn time ( actual burn time of a 90 minute
iDVD, provided everything is mastered, is only 30 mins tops.)

At this point, since you say the project iDVD plays back natively
in the Mac ( and also a PC), my next test would be to get an
DVD-RW, and using TOAST 6, burn a (disc) copy of the iDVD
    final disc, at 1x speed.

If the copy burned at 1x speed plays in your settop, then it
is related to the speed of the burn that is playing havoc with your settop.

If at 1x ( greatest compatability speed) doesn't work, then I would say
your Sony is being fickle about the Media. Rememer, Apple Discs
are made by both Verbatim AND Maxell. Simply because you bought
a pack of Apple DVD media last month ( manufactured by Maxell),
doesn't mean the pack you bought last week ( made by Verbatim)
is going to be compatible with your settop. Settops are more fickle
than internal burners/readers, see the DVD Players list at left
for many reports of people who have posted problems with
    media and their particular machines.

can you put the dvd back into your mac, and open the dvd itself (not to view, but to look at the contents).

    What are the contents?

the copied movie? how did you do that? dvdbackup/dvd2one/toast?

usually the iDvd disks work with no problems.... so this is strange.
