  1. 1st post. Thanks, great forum.
My problem is really a work flow issue or how to reduce it's number of procedures.
I currently record material using a panasonic set top recorder. It's a good one. The finished dvd usually has around 4 vob files of around 1 gig each.
Each vob files has multiple chapters. They seemed to be set automatically by the recorder at around every 5 minutes.
What I would like to do is reassemble the DVD's contents & create a new one. Basically take bits from "this" one & join them to "that" one.
On my mac I will use an A06 for the new dvd.
At the moment, my procedure is so time consuming, it doesn't make it worth while.
Obviously ripping the dvd, converting to mpg2, demuxing, AC3 -> mpg or wav, editing, synching, re-endcoding,burning.
I was hoping that somewhere there is tool that would let me edit directly to a vob file or muxed mpg etc.
I have all editing, encoding tools there are I think, but there are a few I am bit unsure of how to utilise to their full extent.
    Thanks for any advice.

    First off... Welcome!
now, about the only step I can think that would help you save some time would be you can just instantly demux a .vob rather than "converting" it to .mpeg2 (how were you doing that? if that is what you were doing)

once you demux you get .m2v and .ac3 and you can typically begin your editing and such based on what you want to do...

what apps were you using duing your usual method?

  3. I have tried a few different programs such as mpeg2 tools, ffmpeg, missing tools etc.
sort of lost track at the moment. & Like I said, I'm not that afuait with all of the features or functions of these tools yet.

So you say I can demux straight from the source DVD int the .m2v & .ac3
Can I then import those into an app like FCP4.0 or another?
What is the best procedure to demux straight from the source & with which app do you prefer to do this?

    cheers

    two I like
    1. Ffmpegx
    2. MacMPEG2Decoder's bbDEMUX (when you download MacMpeg2Decoder the app bbDEMUX comes along with it)

im pretty sure there is a step between demux and import into FCP that needs to be done. Not a FCP man myself, but do some reading on FCP in here and im sure you will see whats required.

I think its that the .m2v needs to be in a quicktime shell, which just means converting it to .mov (again not the source on FCP help here.... )

FCE tends to agree with m2v's as long as the MPG pack for QT is installed. One could potentially DiVA it first though if necessary (and DiVA is damn fast.)
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

  6. If you are willing to pay a little to reduce all those procedures you mentioned, then you might want to look at Miraizon Cinematize. It looks like it does what you want and might save you some time.

  7. Or if you know what you want for sure you can edit straight from the vob's in DVDshrink ( it lets you see what you want to save and it saves just that in VOB VIDEO_TS folder ) you can do this rather quickly with all the movies you want ( DVD Shrink usually takes about 3 to 4 minutes to save what have chosen, even if you pick an hour of a movie ) then you join them all with DVD2One. whole process shouldn't take you more than 2 hours to do. How's that for speed.

  8. Yeah but shrink is for PC's ?
    I don't use emulators.

Ok just had a look at it. Good program.
However you are limited to chapter extraction only.
    But it is good.

  10. OK belongil I was just suggesting the shortest route to accomplish your goal the other way will take 6 hours minimum. If money and time is your concern you might one to try it. If not cool I'm a Mac man myself but I hate wasting time if I could do it faster.

The problem with doing a reauthor "edit" in Shrink is that you cannot edit on a frame by frame basis and you cannot edit the video and audio separatly. Not only that, it creates separte VTS numbers for each section you generate. This causes a pause on some some settop players when playing. Don't get me wrong, though, I think it is the best free program avaliable. I have been looking for a way to edit the separate streams of VOB files without demuxing for awhile, but don't have a solution yet...see this latest post...

  13. Hey Jimmykicker your right about frame by frame but you can make it seamless with DVD2One's seamless option.

PS: And I don't think he wants to separate the video and audio just wants to repackage with his choice of order.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but try playing around with Yade. You can find a link to it if you search this forum. From what I can tell if you don't care about multiple export options it lets you do more than Cinematize does and it's free. The only problem is that it's in French (that's where the playing around with it comes in). I'm not sure why there aren't more people using it or why there is no English version. You can very precisely define what gets extracted, so no editing is needed. I'll extract segements that I'm interested in as separate muxed mpeg2 files and then use MissingMpegTools to create a VIDEO_TS folder. Each segement is automatically defined as a chapter. Very slick.
