I have a bunch of .vob files, but don't have the other .ifo, .bup or even the title file (_0.vob i guess). I was happy to play it as is on mplayerc. But, how do I edit it to cut out sections I don't need ? Seems like the tools recommended here (DVDshrink or Vobblanker) cannot process .vob files directly. Nothing fancy, just looking for a basic .vob editor that works with the above constraints.

    Thanks!

womble mpeg video wizard accepts VOB files and outputs to mpg2 via stream copy (no re-encode/quality loss)

With MVW, it puts out a .mpg file, not a .vob file. It ought to be lossy. Which one from the file format menu should I choose to get something close to .vob ?

I also tried AviDemux. It forces you to encode.

Ideally, I'd just like to take the .vob files I have, chop off sections, and write it back to the same file in the same format as input.

    Thanks!

no, it isn't lossy. nor was the process of authoring the mpg files to dvd (vob) lossy.

    choose automatic (*.mpg)

you already have a crippled dvd structure so keeping it as a .VOB will benefit you in no way. You are going to have to re-author the files regardless.

Not that file format. I was referring to the one in Export --> General --> File Format --> ??

Sorry should have been clear in the previous email itself.

And...why do i need to reauthor anything ? I seem to be able to play the individual files on my computer. I could even burn it on DVD and play it on TV. These are disaggregate collection of .vob files from different sources. So, there is no point for me to group them under many different DVD titles (like if it was a movie collection). All the .vob's are under one directory now.

I guess if you are using a hard-drive based device with a TV, like Popcorn Hour, you'll be ok and if your DVD player can play VOBs all by themselves, great, but if you try to play data DVDs on someone else's DVD player, there is an excellent chance it won't be able to read the disc.

A good software player can play almost any video or audio format, but hardware players are a different story. Although some newer hardware DVD players can play a few file formats from a data DVD, most can only recognize and play a properly authored standard DVD. So, authoring is needed to ensure portability and compatibility with a wide variety of equipment.

I don't know of any video editor that imports VOBs and exports VOBs without authoring. There's a progam called VOBMerge that joins VOBs and exports them in a larger, bastardized VOB, but that's as close to what you want as I've seen.

Use ifoedit to authorize the vob files, only takes a few minutes and then you can use dvdshrink and Vobblanker.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.
