  1. Hi !

I wanted to put a 50 minute clip on one SVCD.
Cropping top and bottom of the picture as well
as encoding with TMPGEnc's CQ at 50% got my
mpg-file down to about 450 mb.

I'm able to play but I am NOT able to FF/Rew.
these 50mins SVCDs!!! I cut the mpeg2 files in
2 parts with TMPGEnc (30mins and 20mins) and burned the
30 mins clip which played PERFECTLY (able to FF/Rew.).
So obviously I did encode correctly!
(If I put both cut clips on one SVCD everything is
screwed up and the DVD player is not able to play
    the SVCD...)

I joined the 2 parts (with TMPGEnc) and again I could
NOT FF/Rew (just play and watch). This has NOTHING to
do with the Nero Scandata bug for I tried it with
WinOnCD 3.8 PE with the same results!!!

    ANY SUGGESTIONS OR SOLUTIONS (!!!)
    ARE HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!!
BTW I'm using Philips DVD751 (latest firmware)

    Thanks in advance
    Med.

  3. i think it's caused by your dvd-player,
'till now there is no fix for it (as i know of).

i own a dvds510, yamaha (based on dvd711, philips), i got the same problem.....

to be sure: take your svcd with you to the store and try to play on a Pioneer...

    regards
    Sando!

  4. @ sando !
thanks for your reply, although these are bad news.
I will try to make a clip with a chapter each minute
so i can "rewind" or "forward" in some way...

    @ all !
If someone knows a workaround or owns a philips dvd 751
who does NOT have this problem please write me!!!

  5. If I read your problem, I think the cutting with TMPGenc is creating the problem. It's not your player, because the first part is ok and the burn software should also be ok, if the first cd is good. Did you try to cut it with other software?

Let me guess. You're using Nero? Nero did have FF/RW problems with Philips players and I think there's a patch *somewhere* for it.

Or, you can try using WinOnCD to burn SVCD's.

  7. Hi !

    @ Peter:
"If I read your problem, I think the cutting with TMPGenc is creating the problem"

I wrote that my UNcutted file doesn't work properly
(because it is too long). While the CUTTED file works perfectly! (This file is 30 mins long).

    @ Braindrain:
"Let me guess. You're using Nero?"
"Or, you can try using WinOnCD"

  9. @ mjjv:

    THANKS for the info!
I have upgraded to firmware 7.22 but it seems as if it
plays mpeg2 files of the same length!
I wished Philips would release a firmware to solve this problem!

    Thanks!

  10. hello,

somewhere i read tmpeg is the problem. on my scott 838 dvd-player i have the same prob. at the same place i read also that demuxing the svcd-file with tmpeg and then muxing it again with bbmpeg should solve the prob. after trying this method i will report again.

  11. Hi kingkong !

Every suggestion is very welcome! I hope it works for you
but I tried and it didn't work for me.
I'm looking forward in reading your report!

  12. try I-Author, i did a 52 min svcd it worked great (totaly compliant on a 700mb disk)

  13. hi medical,

i didn`t try the demuxing/muxing with bbmpeg, but i tried to use other burning software. first i updated my 5.5.0.5 nero to 5.5.3.5.. ahead itself says, that the known bug of winding and rewinding svcd should be removed with this version, but it didn`t work. next i burned the same svcd-file with wocd 3.8 and now it works great on my scott 838 (firmware 2.561). The file has a length of 41:22 min.

    ciao kingkong

t1955feb: how long is the SVCD that you encoded with DVDx?

  16. I also own a Philips DVD711 and encounter exactly the same problem. A SVCD movie with a length greater than about 40 minutes has the FF/RW problem.
    I also tried :
    - DVDx : same problem
    - Demul/remul with TMPGENC or BBMPEG : same problem
    - Nero, I-author, CDRWin with VCDImager : same problem
    - Flaskmpeg with bbmpeg or tmpgenc : same problem
    - Last Firmware (7.22) : same problem

I definitively think the problem resides in firmware which contains bugs or whatelse !?!

Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome !

Not really. Like you, I've tried many possible things but so far without success. I've contacted Philips about it and explained the situation so I am currently hoping for a solution from them.

  19. duck712, don't get me wrong, but I hate it if you are right I also do think that this is a philips DVD
    player problem.
btw, does anyone know if the philips DVD 751 plays
DVD-Rs? If not I will have to buy another player by
X-Mas when DVD-Writer become affordable. If yes, the SVCD
problem won't bother me any longer for I will stick to
    DVD-Rs...

But until then I am afraid duck712 is right and there is
no way to get these long SVCDs running.

  20. Is was mentioned in another thread that TMPGEnc generates Chinese style SVCD scan offsets (used for fast forward and rewind), which are not compatible with US players. If you create the disc image with VCDImager, you can use the update-scan-offsets option. The demux-remux apparently also works, but takes a little longer.

Kinneera: the demux-remux definately does not work on Philips players. I and some others have tried this to no avail. I almost always use Vcdimager to create my images so that doesn't solve the problem either. I just tested the update-scan-offsets function, it doesn't help.

Medical: I hope I'm not right either but I fear that a solution will have to come from Philips. By the way, there is sort of a crude 'workaround' for the problem: use TSCV to create chapters on your SVCD-file, say 1 chapter for every minute. On normal playback you won't notice a thing but every time you press the skip forward/back function you go 1 minute forward/back in the movie. Like I said, it's crude but it works and it's really easy to do.
