  1. I read in another thread that Philips DVD Players have problems with SVCDs exceeding 40 minutes in length. Specifically, they do not do REW and/or FF.

I need a confirmation on this please.

I tried to author an SVCD in two different ways and this was one of the problems I faced (no REW/FF).

Also while, the length of the clip was 43 minutes, the player reported it as something more than 39.

And last, I could not select the last chapter whose beginning was after the 40th minute.

  2. Did you encode with TMPGenc and burn w/ Nero? If so (or even if you didn't) you might want to try demuxing your MPEG, then re-mux it w/ bbMPEG. Then create an image of the MPEG w/ VCDImager, (Nero is ok burning the imager) This solved the ff/rew problems on my APEX AD600A, and several others have reported similar results.

  3. Both times I used the same video and audio source files. What changed, was the multiplexing and the authoring.

1st: Multiplexing: TMPGEnc, Authoring: VCDImager Easy

    2nd: Multiplexing: bbMPEG, Authoring: TSVC

    All of them latest versions.

    Burning was done with CDRWIN.

TVSC produced fully working chapters while those of VCDImager easy had some problems.

I can confirm this on the same player, but I was probably also in the other thread.

I noticed this also. Even a 60 minute clip shows up as 39omething.
By the way, I have no problems selecting chapters after the 40 minute mark, but after this the time display is wrong as above.

  5. Have experienced the same problem with Philips DVD703.

25-30 min video seems OK, 53 minute will not ff/fr

Encoding/authoring/burning tried a variety of ways, with & without demux & remux with bbMPEG and/or TSCV.

Philips provided upgrade on firmware but still no success. Maybe will have to split video into 2 or consider another player.

If you mean splitting the video in 2 pieces and burning them on 1 disk: it doesn't help, I tried.

Buying another player is one option but I'd suggest you contact Philips and let them come up with a solution. If they claim to support SVCD then they should solve this.

  7. Sorry, I meant to split onto 2 CD's, say 30 mins ezch, not into 2 tracks (I tried that too)

I have also called Philips. They sent me the latest firmware update - still no luck. We must keep on their backs (they are very helpful by the way)

Can anyone confirm playing of a 'purchased' SVCD on a Philips DVD over 40 mins (or how they created one..)

Splitting onto 2 CD's at about 30 mins would definately work but would require me to swap disks too many times.

I'm also in contact with Philips, I even sent them a sample SVCD at their request and a detailed problem description. Let's hope they do something about this.
In the meantime I'll just create a chapter at every minute of my SVCD so I can at least have some sort of FF/RW.

  9. I've got the same problem with FF/RW on Philips DVD751, latest firmware 7.22. When SVCD exceedes 42min no FF/RW ...I've tried many way to authoring SVCD longer then 42min(NERO,I-Author,VCDImager,Roxio CD creator(5)) and NO LUCK.
But it works : on menu on DVD player set time where you want to skip and press OK on RC. It works!!

  10. Hey Everyone,

When you burn an SVCD you need to put scandata.dat file in the EXT folder. I would explain in more detail but I think this link will better explain it for ya: http://www.vcdhelper.com/nerosvcd.htm

bbriggidym that is only necessary with Nero and these guys arent even using that. It appears that this is definitely a hardware issue. Philips players have been known to have ff and rw issues.

  12. TOTALLY AGREE
I have given up - better to do it one way every time - a way that works.

TMPGEnc to convert avi to mpg (SVCD) then VCDImagerEasy to author AND burn. Keep movie length under 40 minutes and it works great. Philips also seems to like keeping video rate on the low side, say 2200 kb/sec. Encoding time is also greatly reduced because using CBR - not trying to get 1hr on one CDR.

    * CDRWin OK with TSCV but CDRDAO with 'Easy works a treat. (haven't mastered chapters yet though) ff/fr at any speed, move on time code, and good quality picture.
    * Nero doesn't work properly with bin/cue & latest version wont let me include scandata.dat
    * have tried (& paid for) Nero encoder but it seems to have bugs. May try again in the future.

Bunnies like me like things to work 'properly' and consistently - I might even be able to spend time with my family now - I have been trying options every night for about the last 3 months.........

  14. mdez is right.

If your target is a Philips DVD Player you must keep the total length just under 40 minutes. Therefore the way he describes to go, is the best.

This is what I have been doing from the beginning (source is VHS analog PAL tape).

Capture with VirtualDub at 768x328 (or 340 - I had a CinemaScope aspect ratio) with HuffYUV CODEC, audio at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM stereo.

Total SVCD length under 40 minutes.

Video encoding with CinemaCraft at CBR 2200 kbps (VitrualDub frameserving).

Audio encoding with TOOLAME at stereo 384 kbps.

    Multiplexing with bbMPEG.

    Authoring with TSCV.

    Burning with CDRWIN.

    And guess what:

My first (and most important project) came up with excellent quality.

STAR WARS Episodes IV to VI Special Edition WideScreen Dolby Surround.

    Each movie occupies 4 CDs.
