I bought a NEC 1300A from Newegg for $105. to supplement my Pioneer 04. I burned some Verbatim 2.4 DVD+R discks no probelem. I tried Princo 1X DVD-R which is what I usually burn in the Pioneer 04. Nero 6 saw the Princo 1X as 2X and would not let me select any other speed. I tried to burn but nothing registered and after 10 min. I stopped the burn. The disk was partially burned! The NEC came with Roxio 6 so I tried a burn the Princo 1X with it and it saw the Princo's as 1X and properly burned them.
Why does Nero see them as 2X and Roxio as 1X? Is this just a bug in Nero?

As has been stated before the NEC ND-1300A is a great DVD burner but it simply does not like cheap media and you really can't get much worse than PRINCO brand.

Shame on you for using them with any DVD burner ... you should know better :P

I have burned over 300 Princo 1X in my Pioneer 04 without a single coaster,I think that cancels your pointless negative comment.

So much for having a good attitude.

You've been around this forum long enough that ONE I don't appreciate you treating me this way and TWO you should know by now that the NEC ... though a good burner ... does not like cheap crap media.

Of course you should also know by now that PRINCO media is utter crap and since you are defending them ... let's just say I wll be taking anything you say in the future with a HUGE grain of salt.

Keep on trying to burn those PRINCO discs on your NEC and you will get coaster after coaster after coaster.

Of course that is about all they are good for anyways.

You may want to try a hacked firmware from http://herrie.rpc1.org/ I do not own the NEC ND1300A personally, but I bought, installed, and flashed a drive for my sister's computer a few months ago. The firmware on the page also contains the original firmware versions for the drive. Firmware is available to let you change the region code 5 times before rebooting and rip DVDs faster than 2X. The most important part for you is that the creator of the firmware has added support for several more brands of DVD-R disks. I do not know if Princo is one of them or not, but my guess is that it probably is though. Beware that using a hacked firmware voids your warranty though although I would really like to know how they could tell if you reflashed it with an original firmware afterwards. My sister only burns TDK and Memorex 4X DVD+R so I could not tell you anything more specific about media compatibility. I forgot to mention that I bought the drive from newegg as well. If I were you I would first flash to the latest official firmware to see if that works. If it does not then use the hacked firmware so you will invalidate the warranty only if absolutely necessary.

NEC1300A will burn in 2x, not 1x according to Harrie's firmware web site. I burned 10 Princo at 2x, using Nero 5.5.10.54, all finished without problem. However 3 of them I filled up to the brim with movie from DVD Shrink, the last part of the movies skipped and freezed. Then I burned the same movie using Ritek G04 at 4x, no problem at all. To me the quality of the media does make some difference.

  7. FulciLives is right. The NEC 1300A (which I have) does not like cheap media. Pioneer DVD burners seem to be less picky and is able to burn to cheap media better. From all the forum posts that I have read, it sure seems universally agreed upon that Princo media is junk. I have found that even with the hacked firmware, you do not get good quality burns with with NEC with junk media like Princo. However, Riteks or rebadged Riteks like the Memorex DVD+R work just fine with the NEC so I just stick with them for now. I have had no problems at all with Ritek media on the NEC.

  8. Why invalidate your warranty with unofficial firmware just to use really cheap media? There's plenty around for 75p ($1) that works just fine with the NEC1300.
