  2. Almost any DVD authoring software tool will do this. I think you are confusing DVD authoring software with the video/menu generating software. All the authoring program does is mux your assets into VOB files and generate the IFO files to read them.

You need to make all the menus and transitions in a 3rd party program prior to authoring. Here's an outline of how it works. In Adobe Premiere, Vegas Video, etc. I make 3 video files: A, B and C.

A: is a motion menu (my root menu)
C: is a sub menu (say scence select)
B: is a transition video clip that has part of A, then merges into part of C.

When I author the DVD I set the button on menu A to go to transition B, and the end command on B to go to menu C. It looks seamless to the user (although there's a pause/section when the remote doesn't work). So you have to make all the transitions yourself prior to authoring.

Once you have them made adobe encore can mux them. Although IIRC adobe encore only takes 720x480 full D1 video streams.

  5. DVD-Lab will allow you to do this easily. On top of this it will generate transitions between menus for you! (from a number of set effects like slide, fade, burn etc).

No, that is one area where DVD-Lab is lacking I'm afraid (IMHO) but if you go to the project menu and select create DVD, there is an option to compile without the actual movie. This is therefore pretty quick (just a few mins) and you can then test your creation in a software DVD player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD.
