    Hi
I want to know what would happen to the quality of an (X)SVCD if-
    a. the bitrate is increased keeping the resolution same,ie 480x576
    b. resolution is increased keeping the bitrate same?

  2. AFAIK, it's fairly intuitive...

If the bitrate is kept the same, and the resolution is increased, the visible quality of the video stream will decrease. The same rate of data now has more pixels to deal with - if you want to think of it that way.

So, if the resolution is kept the same and the bitrate is increased, the quality should improve.

As with all things, there has to be a balance (if you are happy to deviate from standards completely with resolutions) - a high enough resolution to give a 'sharp, detailed' picture, but balanced against the bitrate available to cope with the number of pixels this resolution gives.

That's my common-sense view of it anyway....

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

If you want 'great' xSVCD playback try this. Standard resolution, VBR encode with 3500 max, 300 minimum and an average around 2200-2500. This makes for short disks (40 minutes or so depending on Audio), but great playback.

Make sure you player can do bitrates that high.

This is true but the law of diminishing returns sets in eg 20% increase in bitrate might give 50% better quality however an 40% increase in bitrate might only give 60% better quality.
    These figures are mythical examples.
