  1. I'll start with my specs
    Athlon 2400+
    512 DDR
    GeForce 3 TI-200
Memorex Dual 4x Drive (12x read)
Iomega DVD 12x on seperate ide chain
    both set to DMA
    Win XP
force aspi (also tried aspi from adaptecs website)

I have used smartripper, dvd decryptor, and shrink 3 beta 5 and no matter what I try only get rip speeds of 2-2.1x. Has anyone else had these problems and how did you get better rip speeds short of buying a new drive?

  2. This is a known "feature" of many DVD burners. Ripping commercial DVDs is usually locked at 2x.

You need to get a second drive that is a DVD-ROM drive that you use for ripping if you want to rip faster than two times.

I had the same problem and got a the Lite-On and my rip speeds are anywhere from 8-14x. Dual layer discs will rip slower.

  3. Thanks for the prompt reply, and it makes sense, but my other drive is a straight dvd-rom and still wont allow me to acheive any better speed. If all else fails I will pick up a new drive.

The first responder is correct never rip with your burner, they are usually locked at 2x. Your profile shows an Iomega 12x DVD on separate IDE chain. How is your HD hooked up. Hard Drives should NEVER reside in the IDE channel as your CD/DVD drives. NEVER slave a CD/DVD to a HD.

What ptmurphy points out is totally true but before you count yourself out check to make sure your drive is running in DMA transfer mode (and not PIO).

If it is in DMA transfer mode then check your firmware and check what others are saying about your specific DVD drive - keep in mind that upgrading firmware can render your drive inoperative if something goes bad or you try using a bad firmware.

    Good luck...

  6. I had the 2 drives on the same ide, so I pulled my burner off and just left the reader. The hard drive is on it's own ide channel. The transfer mode is set to DMA.

There are no firmware updates for the burner yet, so that's out. I've read, and read these forums and cdfreaks and am getting jealous of all the fast ripping going on.
