  1. Does anyone here know of a simple way to change standard full screen dvd => svcd to wide screen? Or not necessarily make it into wide screen, but have it appear that way by not having the picture take up the entire screen. I recently made a backup of my movie Bend It Like Beckham using Amigo DVD Ripper, but when I tried playing it on my computer with windvd it was full screen and the quality was not much better than a vcd. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

You shouldnt need to shrink the pic that way to get quality, make sure you use at least 2000kb bitrate at 2 pass when encoding cause you`ll get crappy video with lower bitrates on full screen.

  3. Hmm, ok i'll have to check my settings. If I did want to take off some of the screen (just because I'm used to widescreen format), what is the best way to do that?

Here are the settings I used for Amigo DVD Ripper:

    Segment [00] Length:01:47:28
    Camera Angle: 1
    Output Frame Rate: 25.0fps(PAL)
    Track/Language: English AC3 6ch (0x80)
    Sound Volume: 2
    Choose SUbtitle: [0]English (0x20)
    Deinterlace Mode: Interpolate

    SVCD (Mpeg2)
    Video Width/Height: 480/576
Ratio Convert: Keep the same as source

    Does that look normal?

Looks normal but there should be a bitrate setting you can change,is it in the options for that program?im not familiar with that program,i rather use dvd2svcd.Is the source avi in pal resolution?

  5. I haven't seen a bitrate setting so far, but I'm still looking for it. As for the source, it is from an original DVD. Thanks

Ahah, found it.....bitrate standard is 237600, and audio 224 kb/s

n/p,remember when you set the bitrate higher the file size gets bigger so you might need to use an extra cd.

  7. If my bitrate was set that high, why do you think the svcd rip looks just about like a vcd quality wise?

The lower the bitrate the less information that is used for displaying the picture is used so you get that quality.the program you are using is trying to fit the movie on to as few cd`s as possible sacrificing picture quality over the amount of cd`s to use.

  9. The movie is 108 minutes long, so that should be able to fit on two cds at nice quality I would assume. I've seen rips of other movies in svcd format that the quality is almost as good as DVD (and on 2 discs). I'm just confused because I don't know if I need a higher bitrate or a different burning program etc. Also, do you know how to cut off some picture from the top and bottom? I'm used to that style and prefer it over full screen because I think it looks better.

    Thanks!

You wont get good results trying to get 16:9 aspect with 4:3,adding those black borders means you will either have to chop some of the top and bottom video out or have black borders on the side if you want to keep all of the video, the picture should go on good using 2 pass encode if that program does that type of encoding. The higher bitrate gives you the better quality that you see in other svcd`s.

  11. so whats the best way to get good quality then? And how do people make widescreen svcd dvd rips that such high quality but fit on 2cdS?

The best way to get good quality is to encode at a bitrate of 2000 kbps or higher at 2pass,people use widescreen to start with.Just try an encode so you can fit the movie on 2 cd`s,the site here has a bitrate calculator that can help you determine the the amount you can set the bitrate so that you know if it will fit 2 cd`s so you dont go oversize.

237600 kbytes = 1900.8 kbits a byte = 8 bits, most encoding programs use bits instead of bytes for the bitrate value. That should be a good enough bitrate if you can do 2 pass encode, check your program to this if it can do 2pass encode, what that does is the program goes over the file a second time distributing the bits more efficiently, more bits for moving scenes and less for static scenes.
