How do I pause the DVD and make mpeg from it? I have a few family dvds, that I would like to make some pictures with for a Dvd cover. Thanks for your help in advance! If you have any advice on freeware for this, that would be helpful as well.

Yes, use DVD Shrink to rip the VOBs from your DVD. Then Use Virtual Dub mod to play the VOB you want the picture from. When you get to frame you want select Video-->Copy source frame to clipboard. Paste it into your favorite paint program. Both DVD Shrink and Virtual Dub mod are freeware.

Hopefully he won't need them for longer than that.

Having said that I often have trouble loading M2V or MPEG files into VirtualDubMod so I use the MPEG-2/AC-3 mod of VirtualDub and that works A-OK
I think you can download that mod of VirtualDub in the TOOLS section of this website.

Another way you can capture screenshots is to turn off your video card hardware acceleration and click on prt scrn(print screen key) and then open up paint or your fav paint program and edit/paste.Sorry,just read and he wanted mpeg clips.
