I want the ability to back up my dvd collection but a lot of my movies are bigger than 4.37 Gb after I rip them. Is there any FREE software out there that will compress it for me? I use to be able to do it a while back with such software as forty-two. But now it doesnt seem to work and I cant really find any posts on here that tell how to do it without paying some money for software. Any ideas?

I am using dvd shrink ver 2.3 with excellant results. some dvd's are just to large to shrink the whole disk or even reauthor just the move title but 90% do and even at 10x compression they look and play great for me
I think the download is from this site -
I am always shocked
that people dont realize this is the MAC FORUM.
Per your question, sorry none that are free like what you want them to do
ffmpegx can handle resizing the dvd but its much more difficult than a simple select folder and push start.
for what its worth, the apps (dvd2one or dvdremaster) are well worth the $$ -
Actually I just figured out my own problem. I messed around with a couple of free programs and it seems that Minx transcoder works pretty well. I used matrix reloaded as a test movie which turned out to be around 5.5 gigs. By using transcoder, I was able to compress the movie to 4.16 gb. Granted it did take about 8 hours but I'm pretty use to that and plus the software is free so you can't beat that. I was a little bit afraid of the audio but it was in synch and preserved the 5.1 surround sound. So if you dont wanna spend any cash this holiday season and dont wanna waste putting a movie on two dvd's, try Minx transoder which can be downloaded from this site I believe.

I reccomend DVD2OneX. It has some great features, and it doesnt take long to back them up. I reccomed getting a 220 or 320 gig HD. I have 2 80 gig, filled with backups. I tried DVDremaster, with no luck. Its quality wasnt as good as DVD2OneX. Spend the $$. DONT PIRATE IT! people who do that shall go to hell.

I completely disagree with qshartle. The folks making DVD2OneX and DVDRemaster are making products that require decryption programs like DVDBackup and OSEx to operate. Are they giving any money to support the authors of DVDBackup or OSEx?? NO!! Are they even contacting the authors of those programs? I doubt it.
Why do you think there haven't been any new versions of DVDBackup and OSEx released? We're all going to be stuck if those programs stop working, and you can blame on the greedy people at DVD2OneX and DVDRemaster. -

An updated version would be sweet. Are the authors even still around?

i thought that was a link to some article about an update
how misleading
hahahahahah -
Galactica,
People like yourself might be willing to pay for an improved decryption program, but nobody can sell it legally. Anyone who starts trying to charge for it risks following 321Studios and the other guys who are currently being sued by the movie companies.
That's why these folks at DVD2One and DVDRemaster have it so good-- they rake in the money from people like you while letting somebody else do all the work of writing a ripper program and getting in trouble legally. -
I see your point. however, i give props to the dvd2one and dvdremaster makers for targeting an audience and making a profit off it. its just good business as you pointed out.
sucks though that in business someone always seems to get stiffed. -
I agree, the DVD2OneX and DVDRemaster folks have done a good job of targeting the market and making good products. If each of them offered a good decryption tool as well, then I would have no complaints with them taking in as much money as they can.
My beef is just with the way the DVD2OneX and DVDRemaster folks are currently exploiting the good will of the freeware authors to make money while avoiding any of the legal risk. That stinks, in my opinion. At a minimum the freeware authors deserve some share of the profits their work has generated. -
sure, that would be awesome, then we would get an updated dvdbackup !!!! I hope you sent your email, if not, read the sticky!
