  1. Hi all,
Having recently bought the canon mv630i camcorder I'm getting to grips with it slowly. One area which is really bugging me is capturing footage from a VHS cassette into my camcorder which I can then edit. I need someone to tell me step by step just how to go about this. The manual I have just ain't clear.
    1. What cables do I need?
    2. I presume one end of whatever cable must go to the camcorder but where does the other end go?...TV, video ???

Boy this is driving me crazy.
Please put me out of my misery.
    TIA,Pete

If you are trying to record from VHS to your Camcorder, you would hook the video out (yellow wire) from the VHS deck to the video in of the camera. Then hook the Red (right channel) and White (left channel) audio output of the VHS to the audio input of the camera. Then make sure the camera is set to record from a line-in source and start recording. That is, if you want to record the VHS tape to the MV tape.
If you want to go directly to your PC from VHS tape, you'll need a firewire card and the camera has to have pass-through capability to send the signal from the VHS to the PC (the camera converts the analog signal from the VHS to DV that can be sent over firewire/ieee1394 cable so you can edit it on your PC, if you want).

  3. I have the Canon 500i and the standard lead it comes with is used for both AV in and out. Just plug the yellow phono plug into the video out on your VCR and the red and white phonos to the right and left audio outs, as stated above. You will need the remote control to switch the camcorder into record mode (make sure you have it set to VCR and not camera) and press the play button to start your recording (not the record trigger). Alternatively you can connect a firewire cable to the camera and use it for straight passthrough into your PC - but make sure you take the DV tape out first.
