I am looking to buy some dvd-rs, but I want to make sure my NEC 1300A will recognize the discs. I would like to start a list of what type of dvd-r/dvd+r work in this burner, and which do not. I will start off by saying
    Work:
    1. FujiFilm 1x Dvd-r
    2. Maxell 4x Dvd+r
    3. Unbranded 1x dvd-rw (white top)
    Does not work:
    1. Unbranded "general use" dvd-r

anybody else had good/bad experiences with discs???

    Works:
    Verbatim 4x
    Princo 4x @ 2x

    Works NOT:
    Monarch crappy shit-dvds 4x

  3. I've had success with:

    Memorex DVD+R 4x
    FujiFilm DVD+R 2.4x
    Ritek DVD+R G04 4x

  5. Discs with the media code AN31 will not work on the NEC at present.

  6. I just got this burner up and running. I flashed to firmware 1.08
The only discs I've used so far are:

    Optodisc DVD+R 4.7gb 4X

Out of 25 discs, I've made about 8 coasters. Part of them was my fault, but the rest?
Some would burn most of the way through the movie, and them lock up.
Some would burn and not play at all.
    I'm guessing it's the media.

    I have some Ritek G04 -R and BeALLT 4.7GB 4X coming.

I'm told that Ritek is the good stuff. We'll see.

RITEK G04 and G03 (-R) work great and no coasters. RITEK 2x -RW work great also. TDK 2x -R also work flawlessly.

  8. Mirror 2x general use ( -R) work fine in TDK 440N (which I understand is the same writer rebadged).

  9. If that is true, beware !!

It may be rebadged drive but the firmware is different. All of the Mirror discs I have seen are the AN31 that I was on about earlier, and these do NOT work with the NEC as it stands.

I had some mirror dvd-r discs with that code, worked fine on my ND1300 @ 1.07 official firmware. I dont rate the discs for long term quality though. Im having great sucess with Ritek GO3 DVD-R (made by datasafe) in this drive, and they are only 57p each.

    Why?
What should i be worried about?

Incidentally my TDK came with firmware 1.06 which worked fine with mirror, but I'm now on 1.09 with no problems.

Wow, it's like talking to yourself. What was I saying about NEC drives and AN31's ? Come on, keep up !

Seriously, the AN31's don't have a good track record with the NEC drives, and at least one retailer advises against them.

For example, check out the Mirror discs here:

    http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/FOR_DVD_R_RW_CLICK_HERE.html

    "ADVDINFO: AN31
Suggested for use on the following DVD Writers: Pioneer A05/105 /A06/106.
Will **NOT** write in the NEC 1300 DVD writer"

Plus one of my colleagues who won't be told bought some of these, found they didn't work, and let me have them which is how I know the NEC drives reject them and I get on alright with them.

I've been using Verbatim Datalife 4x +R disks with very good results. Made in Singapore by Mitsubishi Chemicals.

The TDK 4x +R disks I tried didn't work well at all. Very poor playback.
Made in Taiwan with the id RicohJPNR01

Using Herrie's 1.07v3 firmware, DVDShrink and Nero 5.5

  14. I've just tried some Optodisc -R discs (x2.5) and I have not had one coaster out of 5 straight burns. Picture is awsome.

    I have Optodisc's +R (x4) disks, and just about every-other disc is a coaster.

    Using X-Copy Express.

  15. Of course, the picture quality has nothing to do with the media so long as it can be read. Now, the compression ratio and source, that's another matter.

  16. Stay away from Team5 DVD-R 4X (media code NANYA). Although it can be burnt with firmware 1.08, you'll get a lot of sector errors especially at the beginning of the disc.

  17. Most of the compatibility issues are around firmware and mediacodes..

I have AN31 media burning quite nicely at 2x using Herries firmware so you will never get a definative list as different people are using different hacked firmwares

  18. Asisoft - send those Nanya's back - I suspect you have got a bad batch.

I am a great fan of the 2x Nanya's, and they have all been excellent to date. I don't know in what way the 4x are different, but I have yet to have any problems with the others in their range.

It might be a compatibility issue with your recorder, but if that were true I would say it would affect the whole disc if it starts out bad from the onset.

  19. The DVD+R(W) performance of my neighbor's Nec1300 is outstanding.

    FW 1.08
Burning the white printable [RITEKG04] takes 14:30 (full disk) and perfect.
Some other type of [RITEKG04] burn at 2x! Made a couple of coasters too.
We're gonna try Herrie's 1.07 this weekend to solve this

    2x[PRODISCG02] are perfect

    Just two quick questions:
    1. How could you burn DVD-R at 1x when the Nec1300 can't write at 1x
    2. How could you burn DVD+R at 1x when no PC burner can do it

Monarch works with Herries firmware at 2 x.
SW Technology dvd-r works like a charm at 4x and is cheaper than princo in sweden anyways. No coasters yet. Has Optodisc as id.
Princo works fine at 4x with 1.08 firmware BTW
