  1. If I can burn and watch both PAL and NTSC XVCD's on my player, does that mean that I can most likely watch both PAL and NTSC DVD's on the same player??

The logical answer to me is yes. My player is PAL/NTSC and also plays PAL/NTSC VCDs so I can't see why it would be any different in your situation.

  3. Just be aware of region coding. If your dvd player is multiregion then no problems, but if it is locked to region 1 and you try to play a region 2 pal DVD, then it wont play. Not because of the pal format but because of the region code.

I never realized that both my players will convert PAL to NTSC on the fly, and pretty well I might add. I got an obscure and mostly out of print DVD and stuck it in, played great(lotta letterboxing). Later on I watched it again on my PC....and sure enough...it's PAL.

    Try it and see.

  5. Thanks....
So,since zoning seems to be the more appropriate question...is NTSC playable in more than one zone?
    (same question for PAL)

Is it your DVD player that converts PAL to NTSC on the fly, or is it your TV that accepts PAL input

Just playing devils advocate a bit here.

I think it depends on what your system can handle and where you are. I'm in Australia. Our format is PAL but all the new TVs are pretty much NTSC capable which means if you have a multizone DVD player you will be able to play all regions DVDs, therefore PAL and NTSC. I also have a VCR that plays PAL and NTSC. I know in a lot of parts of the world, including the USA, they stick pretty much within their own format. It's a lot harder to get multizone players in the US (and more expensive) than it is here, for example. One of the few areas we have it good in. Thank God for multizone DVD players. My DVD collection would be half the size it is otherwise. :P

PAL/NTSC compatibility is a completley seperate issue from region codes. Nearly all commercial DVD's are encrypted and have a region code. Only players with the same region code as the disk can play those DVD's. Many players can be 'hacked' to play disks with any region code. SOmetimes the 'hack' requires a firmware update but many can be achieved with the remote control. Look in the DVD players list to see if there is a known hack for your player. If not you are stuck with playing disks from the appropriate region.
