    hello all,
I installed a Ethernet card (PCI) in my computer and wonder if it is possible to have an Ethernet address without hooking it to say...a DSL or Cable internet service ?

When I check my pc for an ethernet address, all I get is 0000000 as an address. I asked a friend and he told me that Ethernet cards don't have any address...address is assigned by a service such a DSL or Cable Internet.

Because I want to install Maya 4.0 and the software requires a NIC card.

However I wonder why it needs a NIC when my pc is not hooked up to a network ?

The Ethernet address can be manually added. Your friend is referring to DHCP which ISP's use to provide your IP address so that you can communicate across their network. If you wish to assign your own address you need to know what the addresses are that you wish to communicate with. If this is a peer network all you need is an IP and a Subnet Mask. If this will attach to a Lan you may also need a Default Gateway (The address of the Router). If this is a Windows based PC this can be done in the network neighborhood. If this is a new network or peer network I suggest IP 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Any peers should follow sequence 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 etc.

Depending on which Windows platform you are running set-up varies. 9.x Right click Network Neighborhood and select properties. If this is a new card you may have to install TCP/IP first. Make sure you use the correct NIC card to install your IP. Once you have the TCP/IP device double click it and a new window will appear. Select Specify an IP address and the appropriate grayed out boxes will turn white. Then simply add your numbers. NT is similar, when you select Neighborhood Properties, click on the protocols tab and select TCP/IP.

    Hope this helps,

I have not graduated to XP yet but my guess is it will be similar to NT. Some of the other users here on the forum may be able to give you specifics.

  10. If it's like any other windows:

right-click network (neighborhoor/places) >> properties >> look for TCP/IP properties >> you'll see two choices (obtain from DHCP or assign IP address) choose assign IP address with 255.255.255.1 mask >> may have to reboot.
