Anybody else noticing some of these new "remastered", "restored", etc DVD are garbage quality, as if they transferred VHS to DVD?
I mean, yeah, I convert my own VHS to DVD all the time... but that's because it's all I have... the studios own the original footage for crying out loud!
The new Married With Children Season 1 set and the Star Trek movie box set are terrible. I like the sets, but I'm not feeling like I got my money's worth on them. They suffer from heavy grain and over-compression.
Only good thing was most of them are single-layer, so easy to backup.
Am I alone, or do others see this too? Where's the crisp quality DVD?
I could do better than that!

Ok, I'm not sure if you're talking about the Trek Season sets or the Trek Movie Boxes but this is the rule ofr Trek:
#1 NEVCER Buy a Trek Movie BOx!
This goes without saying, Paramount chrurns out anew box every third tuesday when Scotty pushes the warpd rive to Transwarp and McCoy travels to the 60sd! Seriously, every time Paramount puts out a Boxed MOvie Set, they just "alter" it tyo add a new Directors Cut/Special Edition Film, this is why I don't buy the boxed sets of the Films, if I did I'd have the Origianl Flicks, and ST: TMP -ST: III and the Originals and soon they'll do ST:TMP - ST: V on DVD Boxes with thwe other films, it's a bad system.
#2. I was away for a wedk in August and rented S III: The Search for Spock, I poped it into my Mac Laptop adn it looked like a LOW QUALITY VHS Tape! Yes, the pixelation is, by far, some of the worst out there, the only thng that even gives it a run for it's money is the "Best of Power Rangers" DVD which is so pixelated that only a Nice Inerlaced TV Seems to "Mask" the problem.
Now here's what I noticed: I don't know if Blockbuster is using Cheap DVD's or havng Special pressings done, but I OWN ST III: The Search For SPock on DVD Special Edition, the EXACT SAME FILM I'd Rented! The copy I PAID For looks MUCH better than the one I rented (well I paid for that too I suppose, but you knwo wat I mean) which I found quite odd. The Botom of the Disc looks the same to me, and it's definitly Dual-Layer, so my guess is Paramount probably made some lousy first runs, cleaned them up and struck another batch, I've yet to get ST IV and ST V Special Edition DVD's yet, but ST: TMP thrugh ST: III all look just fine for the most part on a normal TV and even the PC, maybe it's just the boxed set pressings?
Very odd though, but not uncommon, I know sometimes when things are "bundled" they don't look as goo a the single Volumes or vice-versa, the only excuse for this would eb a show thatw as mastered onto VHS in the 80's and even then, it's kidna BSish, they shouldb bale ot hide the pixelation a little better, I think it may just be your movie box of TRek, because my single volumes are fine.
Now if only I could say the same for "Best of Power Rangers" which looks like VHS on DVD... *Sigh BVS, Disney. VRP whoever's calling the shots, get this right already!) -
I checked out Married with Childern DVD. Agreed.... Quality is carp all the way. Amazing they can put out this kind of sh-t out there for people to buy.

At one point it looks like they mass produced a series of old Jackie Chan movies onto DVD. I got one for $3, and I had no question that they "remastered" the DVD from a VHS master (junk data on the top few scanlines and everything when you watch on computer). I wasn't too disappointed, since it was really cheap so who cares if they just did a quick-to-dvd capture and burn like so many of the low-end dvd "authoring" packages do today.
Unfortunately, big media houses may have caught that idea but skipped the whole sell-for-cheap part of the whole bargain. Hopefully people can boycott these poorly done releases.
