  1. My tools: Ulead Video Studio 5.0 w/ DVD Authoring plug-in, HP burner (unsure of model), Panasonic A110 standalone DVD player. With that information, I'm having an awful time trying to play my movies on my DVD player. It doesn't recognize the disc. I can capture the video with no problems. And I can encode it as well. I've tried VCD and SVCD with no luck. I've even tried CD-R and CD-RW discs. What am I doing wrong here? I just started a week ago with this so I'm fairly new. I've followed all of the help I could find and even search on this site for help. Anyone out there with the same or similar specs as above who can help? I'd really appreciate it!

You should have checked the DVD Player compatibility list on this website

Apparently your player will not play CD-R's. You mentioned that you tried using a CD-RW, but I presume that the layer wasn't the correct colour. Try another type and read the link - especially the comments left by other user about this DVD Player.

  3. I did check the compatibility list and indeed it did say only CD-RW (which I did try). I also read through the comments from other people who have my DVD player and had a mixed variety of comments (one even said CD-Rs work!). Here's what I've done: 1. capture the video (no problem) 2. Encode it through the DVD plug-in through Video Studio to VCD (both PAL & NTSC). 3. Burned it on the CD-RW. When inserting the disk, all I get is "No Disc". Is there anything special you have to do to the disc before it can be played (like close it out or something)???

"No disc" is usually displayed when the DVD Player can't read the disk itself or the format. What burning software are you using and which version, and if possible which settings?

wouldn't it be easier for testing to take a small mpg-file, burn it as vcd and having a look if it works with your dvd-player?

  6. Thanks for the quick response. I initially used Video Studio 5.0 with their DVD plug-in. I also tried using Nero without any luck. I tried the different VCD settings in both softwares (PAL, NTSC) but neither seemed to work. Knowing I would probably run into problems, I only captured about 20 seconds of a video that I made. I went back and read through the user comments on my DVD player and the only other thing I can probably do is to try different CD-RWs (different color layers). Though, I could probably ask you or anyone out there the difference between them as this is the first time I really heard that there is actually a difference between them. I just picked up some CD-RWs off the shelf (the best bargain). I've only tried the Memorex ones. Could that actually be the problem or would I be wasting my money to buy different discs??

Funnily enough the cheapest ones you can purchase often work better, than well known (and more expensive) brand names. Just like the DVD Players - if you check what a Sony DVD PLayer can do and compare to an Afreey or Apex, the cheaper the better .... weird ain't it!

I found that Mr. Write 4X CD-RW works on most picky DVD players.

  9. I have to agree with aldus4. I've had such good luck with the cheap stuff, players and cdr's. I usually buy about 100 cdrs at a time for around $20 USD and they work perfectly on my cheap Apex660
