I just converted my first .avi source to dvd-mpeg. But I thought I would be able to play it on my tv. Well my tv is NTSC standard only.

1.) For converting frames, do I have to convert the frames of the orginal source, then convert it to dvd-mpeg? Or can I just convert the frames on the dvd-mpeg?

2.) If i just convert the frames of the final source, Will it still match up with my extracted audio which I turned into an Ac3 file when i author and burn?

If your source is AVI this is the workflow outline:
convert PAL AVI to NTSC AVI (check guides and methods available)
encode converted NTSC AVI to NTSC MPEG video stream
multiplex your ac3 audio with NTSC MPEG either before compiling a DVD or during that process (most good DVD compilers do that)

You need to adjust length of your audio using tools like BeSweet (again check guides or search for postings covering this subject) it has an option to automate it.

I never used AVISynth but as far as I understand the process this tool will allow you to encode from PAL AVI to NTSC MPEG utilizing Tmpeg MPEG2 encoder (many posts covering this by e.g. Fulcilives explaining in detail how to go about it). Apparently quality is v.good.

Some NLE's like Vegas or Adobe Premiere will allow dropping the whole Avi onto the timeline end encode it to NTSC Mpeg2.

Your audio has to be handled separately (unless you use pro grade tools that can handle both). If audio is Ac3 that is a must.
