I'm under the impression that .AVI video files for windows are the uncompressed version of any video files for windows. (roughly speaking).
anyways i have herd that its much easier to work with these uncompressed video files on my non linear digital video editing software(After Effects). now i have the means of compressing my files into mpeg2 files and i also have mpeg4 codecs, and i can even create video cds if i would like. but i haven't really tried or figured out how to get my mpeg files back to .AVI status. if anyone has any ideas i would greatly appreciate them

Avi is just a wrapper format. The contents may be compressed in many differnt wasy depending on the codec used. It is true that it is easier to edit avi files than mpeg files but this doesn't mean they are uncompressed. Uncompressed avi's do exist but they are absolutley huge. Somewhere around 75Gb/hour or more for full D1 (720 * 480) uncompressed avi's.
To convert mpeg files to some (any) form of avi, take a look Here -
I can't figure out what software that example is using to convert the asf to an avi?

Even "uncompressed" has compression algorithms. Maybe better known as "maximum values" allowed of the digital acquisition.

Tools like TRex - Pinnacle will allow excellent! quality conversion from MPEG2 to DV AVI (editing standard). Also Pinnacle studio 7/8 plus numerous "format" converters. From my experience Pinnacle gives better DV AVI output then Vegas and Premiere. Looks so detailed... 100% quality conversion. Best for editing.
