  1. It is the time of year that I start editing and transferring my 8mm analog tapes to vhs for the grandparents for Christmas.
    This year I was thinking of capturing with my ATI TV Wonder and Power VCR. Then compiling all the short clips to one DVD.
    My question is, what software is best suited for editing the DVD compliant MPEG2 clips, trimming them and adding fades and then authoring a dvd image?I was planning on capturing straight to DVD MPEG2 with Power VCR as I have had little success with any AVI capture programs and the TV Wonder. Does a MPEG2 that has been trimmed and had fades added need to be re-encoded?

    Are there any guides on home movie dvd's that I should be looking at?

    Thanks for input,

    Womble mpeg2vcr will let you cut the mpeg. Changing the video(ie having it fade in/out would require encoding it. Then use any DVD authoring program to make the DVD, I use TMPGEnc DVD Author... Actually you can cut and edit w/ that program too, so I would just use TMPGEnc DVD Author.
    Ejoc's CVD Page:
    DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy

    DVD:
    DVDShrink -> RecordNow DX

    Capture:
    VirualDub -> AVISynth -> QuEnc -> ffmpeggui -> TMPGEnc DVD Author

    trims (cuts) , no

    fades - yes - you will have to re-render

    if you are doing editing , you would be much better off to capture in an avi type ..

  4. I fully agree that I would be better off capturing to a lossless avi, editing, then encoding. However I have tried and failed to make sense of the muddle of VFW vs WDM, virtual dub, wrappers, generic drivers, MMC or not, to capture an avi with a higher res than 320 x 240.
    Each time I tried with VD resolution settings, it say "Unsupported format"

    Womble does this only at the piece that is faded.

  6. I took a glance at your link Lordsmurf. It says to use the latest version of MMC. ATI says this is 7.9 when dealing with the TV Wonder (not the AIW).
    I don't know that 7.9 will do the Huffyuv avi capture at 720 x 480.
