  1. I'm wondering ... is there another way besides using Toast 6 to take a referenced .mov file (like what's churned out in iMovie) and burn said video to SVCD? I like to have a fistful of encoding running on my machine while I'm at work or sleeping. With this stack of Simpsons/King of the Hill next to mee that needs to be captured and SVCD'ed, I'd like to know if there's a way to do it besides Toast 6. Cheers

so you want to do batch encodes right?
i haven't played with toast 6 yet, but with toast 5, it also installed the vcd plug in into qt and fcp for me. does toast 6 install a vcd/svcd plug in, the same way? or does toast only allow encoding from inside it?? maybe somehting to look at if you haven't.

if not, maybe some sort of apple script??? could help automate this process, i don't know applescript though.

i've never used this but you could see if this has batch encoding.

Toast 6 does not install any QT plugins. You could possibly make an applescript to batch processing, but it would be hard [read impossible] to do without knowing the specifics of your setup. Other programs to do this conversion are ffmpegX and possibly MPEG2Works as mentioned by Pants (if it accepts DV in a .mov container as source). You might also try giving DIVA a try. You will probably end up using Toast to burn it, but make sure you don't put it in SVCD mode, or it will re-encode the video. You will need to make a .bin disk image with some other program (I think VCDImager does it, but maybe someone with more SVCD experience can help), and then burn in Toast as a disk image.

  4. Tried DiVA, but it wouldn't take .mov as an input format.

ffmpegx is churning away as we speak.

    Now to learn applescript ...

  5. probably of no interest but tmpgenc (PC) will do mov to mpg,(with a plug-in) also batch jobs, so if you could get that working under some emulator?? I bet you mac-ites wish you had a version of tmpgenc..

now that i htink about it, awhile ago bilestyle (sp) sort of explained how to set up batch encodes with ffmpegx through the terminal, it was a little over my head and i never really took the time to figure it out, but maybe if you're familiar with that stuff it'll be cake for you.

Ooh, we are getting nasty here, aren't we . . . Thought I'd chime in with their lack of a good OS from a vendor that doesn't treat you like a criminal, but then realized that it might be in bad taste. So instead, I'll just shake my head in a disapproving manner.
