I've only updated the drivers and software of my ATi All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500 a few times because it always seems to be a hassle. Even in the best of circumstances, I usually need about 6 very slow reboots (W2K), and have to be careful to fully replace all the little drivers.

But now I need the card to capture to DVD spec mpegs, which required moving up to at least MMC 7.7. So a couple days ago I got the latest set of supported drivers from ATi and MMC 8.7. It was a pain to install as expected, and ever since I moved the launchpad to dock as a collapsed bar at the top or bottom of the screen, launchpad fails to start. The only way I can get it to run is to uninstall all the drivers and software (at least ATi does this in one step now) and re-install. Then launchpad once again seems to run without an error.

On top of that, when using the latest driver set, Catalyst fails to install after reporting a severe "no video driver" error. I have to manually add the driver by itself and re-run the Catalyst install. So - I installed the previous version driver set (which still uses MMC 8.7) and it was a very smooth install. However, the launchpad error persists, so I'm not convinced that I've found the sweetspot yet.

Is this a problem with MMC 8.7? Is there a "best" version of MMC as far as reliability is concerned? Any comments or suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Tim

  2. MMC 8.1 runs fine on my system. LordSmurf's website says 8.1 and 8.6 are used successfully on two separate machines he owns. However, I seem to remember reading somewhere that 8.7 is hideously buggy and notorious for causing all sorts of fun problems.

Interesting. I run MMC in Win2000 and never had any slow boot-ups when trying ATI's latest drivers. It took awhile to get all those hardware devices drivered, but the boot-up speeds were fine....

Thanks for the tip. I remember reading that Lordsmurf used 8.1 in his guide, and if he's using 8.6 as well I think I'll give that a try.

I don't think my W2K machine boots any slower with the ATi drivers. I think the main reason I complain about the slow reboots is that it takes a lot longer to boot than my XP Pro machine. It really adds up when you're rebooting a number of times to get clean starts.

    WinME, P4 = MMC 8.1
WinXP Pro, Celeron = MMC 8.6

    No problems.

Since my drive on the XP system crashed yesterday, I may revert to MMC 8.1 on it, depending on how it takes. That's my chore for the day, buy new HD, redo OS install, new ATI install. Barf.

    I didn't like the 8.6 MPEG-1 captures.

  5. There was a bug in the MMC 8.6 MPEG1 captures (wrong aspect ratio), but that was fixed in 8.7.

It seems as though the problem I was having with installation was in the Catalyst 3.9 bundle. Catalyst 3.8 installed without a hitch. Unfortunately, it will only allow me to have the launchpad in it's default position. Any relocation seems to cause an error which prohibits it from running ever again unless I do a complete uninstall and reinstall . Uninstalling MMC 8.7 alone doesn't seem to get it back to life when I reinstall.

Running MMC 8.7 with no problems.

System is P4 3GHz, Win XP Pro, 1Gig RAM, with AIW 8500 DV.

Definitely BIG pain installing upgrades. Only had AIW for a short time so I have only upgraded twice. No experience with versions prior to 8.x

  8. I'm using MMC 8.7 on my AIW 8500 Radeon with the settings from lordsmurf and get great mpeg2 captures. As for installing drivers and upgrades I had nothing but problems when trying to remove the old ones first. Now I just install over the old ones and haven't had a problem since. I'm not recommending this but it works for me.
