  1. I have read many forums here and notice that alot of people use 1. Dvd decrypter 2. Dvd shrink and finally nero. My question would be that if decrypter and shrink do the same things why not use just shrink and nero. I don't no why people ould use all 3. Does dvd decrptyer do some thing that dvd shrink does not ??? I would appreciate any input on this subject.

  2. If a DVD is a DVD-5 (single layer) it will fit on a DVD-R(+R) without shrinking it. DVD Decrypter will make an image of it to your hard drive and then burn that image to a DVD-R(+R) disc. If it is a DVD-9 (dual layer) the files must must be reduced to fit onto a DVD-R(+R) disc. Instead of making an image with DVD Decrypter, you must use it to rip the files to your hard drive and then shrink them with DVD Shrink (or whatever program you like). You can then burn them with Nero.

First of all, the guides you see may have been produced before DVDShrink could decrypt DVDs itself. The latest version (v3 Beta 5) can succesfully combine the ripping step of DVDDecrypter and produce a shrinked version in a single step.

One reason for separatelly decrypting on HD might be to produce 2 DVD5 out of a DVD9. One with just the movie and a second with all the extras. In such a case, ripping separatelly - once - saves you a ripping step.

The second reason might be that ripping as a separate step might be faster. As DVDDecrypter doesn't have to recompress while ripping, it can be slightly faster to rip this way - although I guess the gain might be marginal.

Also, if the original disk is a DVD-5, then you only need a single step. DVDDecrypter.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  4. DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink don't do EXACTLY the same thing. DVDShrink does have a ripping function, but it's main focus is shrinking content on a DVD-9 down to a size that will fit onto a DVD-5.

DVDDecrypter's main focus is to ripp the contents of a DVD to your drive or create an image of the disc for later placement on to another disc.

Some people like the ripping functions of DVDDecrypter better, because some DVD titles cannot be ripped by DVDShrink, but Decrypter can. It really boils down to what tools you become familiar with and which ones you trust.

I know a lot of people that rip the DVD files to their hard drive, shrink them down with DVDDecrypter, then burn results with NERO. It really all comes down to preference and need.

  5. DVD Decrypter is better on reading scratched DVD's than DVDShrink. It also retries errors if it fails to read....which DVDShrink cannot do instead it will crash with a read error.

A DVD-5 can also be ripped to hard drive with DVD Shrink 3.0 without additional steps. Just select no compression and Backup!

  7. I prefer ripping to HDD with DVDDecrypter before using DVDshrink because it works 100% of the time.Sometimes I would use DVDShrink and it would say it was done shrinking but when I went to VIDEO_TS folder there was nothing in it.

DVDShrink V3B5 doesn't like multi-angle DVD's very well(Star Wars 1 and 2). It also is notorious (for me anyway) for picking up an extra cell and adding to the end of the main. I had 1 DVD5 that came out to 11 GB when finished (3 multi angles).

Soooooo, I rip the main movie and audio with DVDDecryptor then shrink it when the multi-angle confuses it. Now and then it won't do deep-analysis, so again I rip it and it's fine.

Well, lucky me, DVD Shrink 3 Beta 5 have always worked for me. The same can't be said from Clone DVD 1.3.11... Even using Anyday 2.1.0.9 I wasn't able to rip an CSS encrypted DVD
