    The main reason you are not sure is because there are several to choose from. The two more popular freeware applications are DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor. These you use to rip the VOB files from the DVDs. Once they have been rpped you can load them into Virtual Dub mod to make AVIs.

    I would definitely use VirtualDubMod or VirtualDub-MPEG2 (having ripped VOBs with Smartripper or something similar).

    There are lots of guides on using VirtualDub on this site.
