  1. I attempted to Install win 2000 for a mate of mine on his system running Win ME, but the install process just keeps saying "drive C is corrupted installation aborted". Ive run scandsk, defrag and even formatted the drive all with no problems bit 2k keeps stalling. I'm pretty sure the drive is OK as its only 10 months old (60gb Western Digital Caviar) but it just wont take the win2k system.

    Any ideas ?

Have you had scan disk check for errors? I know in 2k the option is called SCan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, I can't remember for the life of me whats its called in the older OSs.

  3. Ran Scandisk a few times - full surface scan too which takes a long time to finish - eventually formatted the drive clean.

Scandisk shows no errors but win 2 k simply says - drive c corrupted press F3 to quit.

You didn't say how you formatted the drive, but I have used a Win 98 startup disk, ran fdisk, removed all partitions, then repartitioned and reformated (FAT32). I'm using XP. Then I put in the system disk and let it reformat to NTFS and finish installing the system. This seems to 'clean out' the drive. If this doesn't work, then the drive may have problems with the boot structure. Had one like this I apparently damaged, but fortunatelly it was still under warranty and the manufacturer replaced it.

you can get this error on systems with:

    overclocked
    or
    bad memory
    or
hard drive overlay (used on drives over a certain size) - since its a software patch , windows doesnt always reconize them and generally you dont need them (now - but for 98 - yes) ... this might be what it is .... you have to run the program and uninstall it (i think) ...
    or
bios not set correctly for type of drive. more common on older systems
    or
drive IS wacked and needs to be replaced ..
