    Hello all,

I'm trying to edit DVD movies with Adobe Premiere Pro for a university course I'm taking on editing. Premiere Pro only accepts the following video formats: Type 2 AVI, MOV, MPEG/MPE/MPG, Open DML, and WMV. I've worked with AVI before (though I have no allegance to any of these file formats), so I decided to try and convert the VOB to AVI.

Anyway, here's the process I've tried to follow:

    1) I rip the movie with either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter into .VOB files. No problem here.

    2) Next, I open the VOB file in VirtualDubMod (I've always like the results of this software). So, I click File>Save As and try to save my VOB to AVI. The problem is that the default for this option is "Uncompressed RGB" which produces a file too large for my HDD (we're talking dozens of GB, here). There is a user option to "change" the video compression, but I have no idea which of these "codecs" I should try or which settings to select.

I've searched this forum and looked at the guides but I haven't been able to find any information on this specific topic. The real strange thing to me is that the original VOB is only 2.86 GB (I do not split the VOB at 1GB as is an option with DVD Shrink), so why would the uncompressed file be more than 2.86 GB? Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, if someone has another suggestion on how I could better accomplish my goal of DVD to an editable file in Premiere Pro, I appreciate your suggestions.

    Thanks for your consideration.

Thanks, John0. I'm pretty much a newbie at this and I'm not sure what "frameserving" means in Virtual Dub, or how I accomplish this. Could you please tell be more about this? Thanks.

inside of the virtualdub folder there is an AuxSetup.exe, open that and click on `install handler`.That installs files that allow virtualdub to framserve which means programs can utilize the feature without the need to reencode the video file for the sake of using filters and such.Open the video file and goto file and choose `start frameserver` and choose a name with the .avi extension so the progam can find it.Im not sure this will work in premiere, maybe someone out there will mention this but it works in tmpgenc.
