108v2 only allows bitsetting, unless your interested in making DVD+R more compatible with DVD players I would go with 109.

Herrie's 1.08v2 is a hacked firmware. 1.09 is an official NEC release.
I used 1.08v2 because I wanted book type bitsetting. One of my Apex standalone didn't accept DVD+RW and now it does with book type set to DVD-rom.

It's really your choice. You don't even have to upgrade if everything works ok as it is. Only update your firmware if it adds something you want. Some upgrades are supposed to allow you to use cheaper discs but if the ones you use now work ok then why bother at this time? There are risks to changing the firmware. I don't mean to alarm you, it's not a common problem but some drives have messed up with bad patches. Even NEC recalled one patch recently after it caused some drives to stop working and they started getting complaints.

When I got my NEC ND-1300A it came with firmware version 1.04 although at that time most people buying it were getting 1.05

I didn't upgrade until 1.08 came out and I upgraded to it using the OFFICIAL firmare.

Recently I upgraded from 1.08 to 1.09 and again it was the OFFICIAL 1.09 firmware.

So far so good. No complaints here

As for the "hacked" firmware versions I don't need them because I have an "old" PIONEER DVD-ROM drive that has a hacked firmware that makes it region free and unlocks the ripping speed.

I only use my PIONEER for RIPPING and use my NEC for DVD and CD burning only.
